Thanks.

I ended up just buying the RRS plate over the Gabale. The (potential) hassle of shipping from China isn't worth price difference. It's not uncommon to have something stuck in customs for 3+ months.

I would have been happy to get a cheap plate of their own design, some of the other Chinese manufacturers have done just that. But the direct ripoff of RRS didn't sit well with me. So I ordered the RRS since it's in stock at B&H but only the base plate.

I have to say that the RRS plate has been awesome since I got it a few weeks ago.

Love that it adds just enough to the bottom of the camera to make it more ergonomic.

The option to use their QD release for a strap has been really great. I have the QD release attached to my PeakDesign strap and can easily swap between attaching to the body vs the 100-400 foot and then decouple instantly when I don't need the strap (tripod, etc).

Also really like that the side/L is detachable with the allen key hidden in the plate. I've been running with it off most of the time but like that it is available when needed.

This is in response to the question from teddoman to my post about how the Promaster 7664 designed for an A9 fit on an A7rIII.

I bought this plate used for use on my A7rIII as an experiment since at that time there wasn't any L-brackets available yet, so I never had it on an A9 myself and can't comment on how it fits that body.

I have attached a couple of quick snaps (poor flash work, but I am headed out for the day and wanted to reply quickly) of how it fits on an A7rIII.

On my A7rIII, the L-bracket 'splits' the access windows so that access is still possible, although it takes a tiny bit of effort to do so. But I have not run in to any cable use concerns.

I find the battery compartment just fine. Easy to get the battery in and out.

In the photo you may notice I have a silicone protective case on the body as well. Adding the bracket over it worked fine.

Looks like if they had pushed the L of the Promaster 7664 a few millimeters forward, the bar might have just fit in the gap between the doors. Right now it seems to be partially blocking the rear doors.

Q re the Kirk and Markins brackets - it looks as though the bracket can be shifted to the side to allow cable access when the camera is mounted on a tripod in portrait mode. Is that correct?

I actually ordered a Promaster 7664 to see if I could live with it (over the RRS) and I was pleasantly surprised that my L is aligned differently than yours. Maybe there are different batches of the 7664? The L fits perfectly in between the doors on mine and doesn't block access to the doors of the A9.

The base of the Promaster is ever so slightly larger than the A9 body. And it's a lot wider at the pinky, Might bother some but I'm totally fine with it, I prefer how it allows you to leave the battery door in place unlike the RRS.

Yes, that is (I think) the main reason they didn't extend the base around the grip to make a slightly larger grip. If they did, it wouldn't be able to shift like that without getting in the way of the battery door, etc. Plus, they'd have to eliminate the lip that keeps those grips in place around the bottom of the hand grip.

Got my Sunwayfoto L bracket ($59) today, quite a nice piece of metal. Of course it doesn't cover the battery compartment so my pinky will need to find another place to rest on, not really a big deal for me.

A naive question: Apart from making it easier to shift between horizontal & vertical framing on a tripod, why else would one want an L bracket on their camera?

That's the reason!

I guess some folk have some secondary considerations; if you get the full length think models it acts as a quasi grip, and it helps protect two sides of the camera body from scratches or knocks.

But basically it's a tingly fitting arca place that allows you to go vertical if you need to (tripod drop slots are a clumsy solution)

It's kind of a bummer than Sony put the USB-C plug in the middle rather than the top of the side, (where the micro USB plug was on the A7R2). When turning the camera vertical with the bracket it looks like it's much harder to find enough grip space to mount on the head. The A7R2 had more room for the plate to grab the tripod mount than the A7R3 has. Having to move the bracket away from the side of the camera is much less convenient and doesn't always allow you enough room for cables. A right angle USB-C cable may help, but I haven't found one yet. It will be interesting to see which bracket offers the most room in this situation.

It's not only easier to switch between vertical and horizontal. It's also much more stable and keep the lens at almost the same place, so you usually don't have to adjust the tripod at all. A much better setup for multiple reasons in my opinion.

BTW, GABALE is not full clone of RRS.

On RRS plate, there is a pin for strap, while on GABALE there is nothing.
For some it doesn't matter, but for some it is valuable to have pin for attachment of anchor links or handstrap.

If you use a ball tripod head, vertical becomes much much more easier. You only need to move the ball part, no need to unlook the panning part of the head in case you are not using an L-Bracket.

SunwayFoto works great on A7R III. I replaced the knob with a hex bolt used in other plates.

I received my Sunwayphoto L bracket and surprisingly, i prefer my cheap Fittest brand Chinese L bracket to it, solely because i hate not having the extended part over the grip. Looks incomplete and bottom of the grip is exposed. Sunwayfoto is better made, its one piece, but I couldn’t find any fault in Fittest materials.

Have the base plate only, too. Maybe it can be combined with some other L-part.
The RRS base plate is very well made, however and the A9/A7riii ergonomics improved strongly, to my surprise. Will but another one.

@davidbm
A cautionary note about Fittest: My camera didn’t fall, but could have. If you loosen the ball head screw just enough so that the camera is still in the Arca grooves, so that it can slide sideways. Well, the Fittest has no pins or stoppers to stop it from fully moving to the left and right. It just slips through the left side completely. That means in portrait mode or at an angle when manoeuvring the ball head, the camera can fall if the ball head screw comes a bit loose.
On my Sunwayfoto L, the camera stops because of design and pins, even if the ball head screw is loose.
My Benro ballhead has a function where it stops the camera even if you open the screw knob.

PS

I see the Fittest is now available for r3! I should have waited....Of course it might be the same one with new markings.

One thing about the Fittest is that if you use your camera in vertical mode a lot I'm not sure it's great. So as to give really easy port access there's only a small amount of grip on the arca plate on one side of the side plate. The side plate is removable. Fine for occasional use vertically.
