Saturday was a beautiful warm November day here in New York City. Late in the day I headed to Jamaica Bay National Wildlife Refuge planning to take advantage of the pretty late day light and partially cloudy sky. I positioned my self amongst the fragments at the South end of the East Pond. There was plenty of activity and occasionally people passed me on the trail. One of my friends happened by and when he came back out we started to chat. A little while later a ranger passed and hearing our conversation of where the hot spots were joined in the conversation. He has only been at the preserve two years and was fascinated by the history we were discussing. When we brought up some of the areas that used to be good and currently are not he informed us of the things the NPS is or is planning to do to bring things back to pre Hurricane Sandy conditions.
As we chatted one snow goose showed up and we mentioned how we used to get a thousand or more coming in at sunset. The most that had been seen so far this year was 500 and we attributed this to the unusually warm weather. The numbers grew and eventually one flock of about 1,000 did arrive. A little later a smaller group came in with a very pretty sky.
