p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Hawk and Snake

Along the bank of the C&O Canal in Maryland. Reminded me of the Mexican flag and coat of arms (eagle and snake) -- which I think has to do with the founding myth of Tenochtitlan aka Mexico City.

Not sure about the hawk species but leaning towards Cooper's or Sharp Shinned - Legs were very long in a full stretch (as it gutted the snake by stretching as long as it could upwards while pulling in intestines and pitching them).

Love the first image, as we don't see RS hawks too much around my parts. Too bad about the small branch.

The first is my pick as well. I'm amazed that the hawk is not concerned about being bitten. Quality series.

That first shot is amazing. By far the coolest shot of a snake in talons I've ever seen. It's almost like the snake is looking up begging for mercy.

Thanks all - Mercy blow did not take long in coming after the top photo....

... and yes, stupid branch! What was that tree thinking? :-) no matter where I moved there was a branch in front of the pair.

Mike

So you think red shouldered? I thought so at first, but seemed a too small and too long legged maybe?

Nice work on these. I especially like the 1st, too. Agree with Mike on the Red-shouldered ID.

I agree it's a red-shouldered hawk. That first image is very nice despite the stick.

The stick would be easy enough to remove in post. And, yes, it's a Red-shouldered Hawk.

Ahh. The inevitable strike. It's a shame to even mention that branch considering this is such a gorgeous shot but there's no denying it would be better without it. I guess that's what makes this hobby so much fun And so darn infuriating

This shot just pushes all the buttons for me. Ever since I was a kid I've been fascinated by and loved snakes and hawks.
