here is a portrait from yesterday. This was my first time using a 40” diffuser over the subject at an angle similar to a soft box that I normally would use. I think I did well on this, many complements on it. I used my Nikon D850 with the Nikon 105mm f/1.4 @ f/1.4. I probably could have used f/2.8 but I was playing with the wide open thing that most are doing now. I suppose there is a time and place for wide open, it seems to have worked ok here. I like the soft light from the diffuser. It was about 18” above here head.

Now, Mona Lisa with a camera instead of a paint brush on canvas! My, how times change!

Nice shot, but as you noted, you could have used f/2.8 for a bit more DOF given the pose she's in.

While this is nice, it has hot spots that are not to my taste. Cheeks, chin and nose on the left are too hot for me. You posted a later one for the little girl, that in my opinion was just about perfect. I loved that shot.

Yeah John,
I saw those. I think they were caused by a preset I was using.. I should reprocess the image without it and see what I get. I knew it was there, should have fixed it, but I’ll do it later... got impatient I guess. I later realized spot metering her face would have been good to do as well. It wasn’t a paid gig, so I’m glad of that. She didn’t notice, but getting the image near perfect is and should be my main goal... thanks for the reply though.

Lovely image. I like the harmony between her eyes and the nicely blurred background. Yes, more dof to get her hair within the dof would have been nice. I am not crazy about the pose of her body with the back of her hand facing the camera and, to my eye, her awkwardly angled left shoulder. I think the pattern in her dress is distracting. I would like to see just a head and shoulder portrait of your subject.

Great work, perfectly subtle about of light. Just enough to make the image pop

The one thing that jumps out at me is that the focus seems off. It looks front focused so that her eyes aren't quite sharp and the pattern of her shirt becomes more prominent. I think that if the focus had been spot on (hard at 1.4) perhaps the other poster wouldn't have been as distracted by the pattern of her blouse.
The pose doesn't bother me at all, and I like the colors in comparison to the background. I would also say that you nailed the lighting with the diffuser. Nice shot!

Thanks for your input.... I know f/1.4 is hard sometimes, I used continuous AF on her eye and it looks focused to me. Here is a tight crop of her face. A few stray hairs, I’ll clean the up someday. Her shirt is blurred at the shoulder, I guess it’s hard to see on the forum and low res.

I stand corrected. Forgive me. In the smaller image, it appeared to me to be off. Clearly, it isn't. As I said in my original post, nice shot!
Best,
Peter

There have been some reasoned critiques made and I agree with some. Still, I think this is a lovely portrait.

Wow, very sharp at full aperture blow up. And yes, you could probably also get a little more DOF with f2.8 and still blur the background. Nice soft light.

Well done. You nailed the focus and imho great dof.
Two nits....
Remove about half of of the dead space above her head
And, clone out the handful of single stray hairs on her left (viewers right) cheek.
Please share next PP version.

This is when you can play with aspect ratio. Instead of 2:3, 3:4 will crop out some of the dead space above and below without narrowing the width. And get you ready for a nice 5x7 , 8x10.
