p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Questions about wireless flash

I'm completely new to wireless flash (and none too experienced with flash in general) - I've just acquired 2 Godox TT350 flashes for my A7RII and have already run into a problem...

First, what I want to do: handhold a wireless flash for flower closeups with backlight, etc., while triggering it from a hotshoe-mounted master flash. I'll also use it for limited other things, but no portraits or candid stuff.

I already had an HVL-43M, but reading threads here convinced me that it was better to pick up 2 Godox flashes than getting transmitter/receiver for the 43M. I've been playing with the Godox units today; after a few missteps, I think I've got them working the way I want: non-firing master on camera, firing slave handheld. I've had to put the camera into manual mode to do anything other than fill flash, which I gather is normal. I have both flashes set to TTL, group A, channel 1. Everything works OK when I press the camera's shutter release.

The problem: I tried using my wireless remote (Sony "wireless remote commander", RMT-DSLR2) so that I can position the flash as desired when it's more than a few feet from the camera. No go - the camera gives me an "incompatible" message. Is this correct, or is there another setting that I could make? If not, is the Sony wired cable release compatible instead?

Taking another track, is there a way to fire the camera by test flashing the slave flash that I'm holding, or some other way to set up master/slave, etc? As a last resort, I could use the 10-second shutter release timer, but I prefer not to do this because it wouldn't be possible to time it to avoid puffs of wind.

Thanks!

I use these flashes with a Godox xt1s controller and it allows you to change flash settings from the hotshoe without going to the flash itself. I am unfamiliar with rmt-dslr2.

Edit - I just reread your post and think I’ve misunderstood your issue so my post won’t help

Thanks. The "wireless commander" is a remote release, which I often use to trigger the shutter when no flash is attached; it's not similar to the XT1S controller.

Not sure about the remote shutter you have, but you can try two other ways to remotely shoot,:

A) The in-camera touchless shutter app, just wave your hand next to the rear EVF to shoot

B) The Smart Remote App with your playmemories home app on your phone.

See if either of those work.

Thanks! I want to stand near the flowers (away from the camera) to position the flash, so I can't wave my hand near the rear EVF, but the Smart Remote App could have possibilities...I forgot about that app.
