Canon defector here. Still will carry a 5D4. But, with the purchase of a A7R3, which kit would you go with? Canadian prices after taxes, btw

Bag #1 is cheaper, but would require me to sell an outstanding copy in the 35LII. Looking for suggestions on how to improve.

I'd go for Kit II. Gambling a copy of the Sony 35 1.4 which you may never get a well centered one against one of the best 35s Ever? Nope, stick with the canon.

Zeiss 25/2 - is that a Zeiss Batis or Zeiss ZE or ZF? I would really evaluate the effectiveness of your Canon lenses first adapted to the Sony A7r III via either Metabones or Sigma MC-11 before making the final decision. For portraits since we are more at ease and under less pressure, it may be OK but if we are talking about doing weddings as paid gigs.... I just want to make sure that adapted lenses can pull it off, especially if the lighting conditions are not that good inside a church, for example. Just a word of caution here.

bag 1.

fast eye AF and smoother bokeh is way better for weddings than the ultimate in sharp corners (assuming the a7riii is reasonably close to the a9 for AF with the FE 35/1.4).

i'd even choose a decentered FE 35/1.4 over the canon for weddings.

Bag one, but I'd replace the ZA 35/1.4 with a ZE 35/1.4 (best bokeh in a fast 35, gentler focus transitions than any of the modern fast 35's). The used prices on those should bring the final price closer to (or lower than) bag two so you shouldn't have to sell the Canon. Then you'd have two lenses with remarkably different optical qualities that can be used on either body. Use the Zeiss for formals and portraits while you get comfortable (or reacquainted) with MF and the 35LII for everything else.

I have the 35Lii and lots of other L lenses and have changed from a 5D4/xt2 combination to two A9's. I bought the Sony 24-70f2.8, 28f2, 35f1.4 55f1.8 85f1.8. The Sony lenses eye AF is well worth the cost - also the AF accuracy, lack of AF hunting and ability to use all focus modes makes framing, composition and confidence in having a sharp subject very nice. I'm keeping my Canon lenses for now but only using the 35f1.4 Sony for weddings. I bought the Metabones and Sigma MC11 to test my Canon lenses but overall they aren't as fast/accurate. My 70-200 2.8mk2 seems to hunt. I need more testing though. The 24L mk2 works very well.

I agree with Derek's point above. Actually, there was a recent poll about the level of satisfaction of owners with the FE 35mm f/1.4 lens. As it turned out, if you can believe the poll, the majority of folks were happy with their first copy of the lens, and that against the popular beliefs. I am not saying the copy-to-copy variation doesn't exist but apparently the online world tends to exaggerate the issue. FYI, I love my copy of that lens and it is my first. As long as the lens renders objects, mostly people, in my case, reasonably sharply at wide open in the center 70% or so of the frame, I am happy. And frankly, I didn't even bother checking out the corners .

+1.

To be honest, I don’t dare checking out the corners!

I have to agree. After owning 3 copies of the Zeiss, I was never happy with it but this if for MY needs. I do not place my subjects centered with a 35mm as I normally use it for environmental portraits thus my subject is around the "rule of 3rds" areas. The Zeiss sharpeness dropped dramatically wide open moving away from the center.
The Canon is a beast not only in sharpness wide open but also no CA, and surprisingly good bokeh which was what I was afraid would be weak.
With a 42MP beast and the Canon, I feel that I can take any shot, recompose and create multiple looks from one image if needed and still have plenty of detail to work with. With the Zeiss that was never the case.
Eye AF was not much of a factor since at the distance I use the 35mm normally I dont get eye AF with native either plus DOF is enough for face detect to be get me sharp images.
Good luck!

I selected bag 2, but I would suggest a modification. Although I think the Basis 25 is an amazing lens, I would recommend the FE 35 f/2.8 instead. That gives you 3 excellent two lens camera kits. When it is dark and you want primes you have the 35L on the 5D IV and the FE 85 on the A7r III. When you want wider coverage you can put the 16-35 f/4 on the 5D IV and the FE 85 on the A7r III, and when you want longer coverage and f/2.8 is fast enough you can put the FE 35 f/2.8 on the A7r III and the 70-200 f/2.8 on the 5D IV. It might seem crazy to have two 35mm lenses, but these two 35mm lenses are very different and they each primarily serve a different camera. It also puts the price of bag 2 more in line with bag 1 and if you plan to shoot with 2 cameras I think it would work well. Now if you decide you like the Sony better than the Canon, you could add a second A7r III and swap the Canon lenses for Sony ones (and trade in the FE 35 f/2.8 for the FE 35 f/1.4 in the process as well) and you would still have a great kit without too much more money. Time and experience will tell, however, which platform you prefer.

Canon's new 35/1.4 is one of their best, solid and perfect for this need. I'd stretch past the FE 85/1.8 to a Batis 85/1.8. 85mm in portrait settings is not a place to cheap out. Look at your verified needs for a fast 25mm before buying the Batis 25/2.

Pretty much what Josh said. I have both the FE 35mm 1.4Z and the Batis 25mm. It's been months since I used my 25mm but the 35mm 1.4Z is used a ton at every wedding.

Also, I've had great luck with the Metabones adapter in its current iteration. For weddings this fall my Sigma Art 135mm (Canon mount) was my most used lens. Worked nearly as good as a native E-mount lens.

I think imperfect FE 35/1.4 just affect (night) landscape or test chart shooters so I wouldn't worry about that for portraits use.

But I do want to shoot night landscape (among other things) with 35mm so I do worry about getting a slightly misaligned copy
If the misalignment is more than slightly then I think Sony would fix it anyway.

Most of the price difference is the exchange rate. For example, the cost of the Basis 25 before tax is $1,700 in Canada, but if you do today's conversion that is $1,330 US, which is very close to the US price. Then you also have sales tax. It is 13% in Ontario, but other provinces have a very different rate. I think Alberta has a 5% sales tax (which is the federal portion of the Ontario tax) which is less than Ohio which varies around 6% depending on the differential local rates. So, actually the Canadian prices are pretty comparable to the US ones.

To the Canon Zooms add Sony 28/2 + Sony Zeiss 55/1.8 + Sony 85/1.4 GM
Reason: 28/2 as a cheap but good replacement for the 35. 55/1.8 for catching the scenery, groups and some more environment in portraits. And no compromizes at 85mm.
