p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Safari lens dilema

I am heading to Kenya and need some lens advice. I have a canon 500 ii and a 400 DO ii and can’t decide what to bring. Obviously, the DO would be easier to travel with and to handhold in the field. It takes the TC’s well and would give me a light 800mm f8. My concern is the loss of a stop vs the 500 plus a 1.4 tc. For those that have been, how important is this over the reach and portability? I would use a 1dx on this lens and also have a 100-400ii / 5dsr combo. Thanks for any insights.

It depends on the tour, if you can/want to be waiting around in a good spot in good light, or if you only have point-and-shoot opportunities because the "schedule" only allows for that.

On good tours you get the opportunity to focus on a good opportunity, in a location of your choosing, that's when I would bring 500mm II. From feedback history of your tour, you might get clues. If it's a private tour that adjusts to your requests, definitely 500mm II with 1.4x and 2.0x. They are small.

I would bring a bean bag for times when you can't use a tripod.

I am not a fan of 5DsR when used in very low light. Once you experience that, you'll know why. Sensor noise.

400mm DO II is great when you can get close or if it's on the second body and you're switching between 500+1.4 and 400 bare.
