Earlier this year, I ventured up to Dante's View in Death Valley National Park while Badwater was flooded hoping for sunrise drama. As I ascended the last little bit of 15% grade that leads to the parking lot, I entered.... the clouds. The cloud ceiling was resting on the top of the Black Mountains upon which I stood, obscuring the view below. I was committed, however, so I stuck it out to see what happened. Shortly after the sun started to rise, there was a brief moment where the wind cleared out the clouds long enough to see the reflection in the lake below. The warm sunlight of sunrise was lighting up the clouds somewhere towards the far side of the valley, shining through some unseen window. Meanwhile the cloud deck around me is illuminated only by the blue sky. It was quite a scene.
