Captured this last evening as the bitter Midwest cold front pushed into my area. Fall is a great time here to capture these phenomina.





A sun dog (or sundog) or mock sun, formally called a parhelion (plural parhelia) in meteorology, is an atmospheric optical phenomenon that consists of a bright spot(s) to the left and/or right of the Sun. ..

I was driving home from Cleveland (driving into the west) and I saw something just like this....at the time I thought that it might be a rainbow, or a part....but it looked very similar to what you have above except there was only one of them....really cool!

90% of the time they are Herb. But this capture was just extra ordinary.... a storm had just passed...there was a sequence of shots prior to and post capture that was also spectacular. It showed the upper cloud strata turning color and the jet going right thru it and coming out the other side.
This time of year, with much rain, these are very frequent. The water vapor in the air make sunsets very exciting at times.

Very nice and great timing! Certainly nailed the assignment with this one!

I've only seen single ones and even then, I've only seen them three times in my entire life.

Thanks everyone! It was timing and the end of a huge cold front moving thru our area. This time of year we get "sun pillars" at dawn, many sun dogs and a few other cloud phenomena this time of year.
