p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Lions of Botswana

1.This guy was enjoying the sun with his mate; I liked how the golden light was playing on his head (but not so much with his mate in the shade). Taken in Chobe National Park

2. There was a pride lazing around in Chobe. This immature male was in poor light, but I liked how he looked.

3. This immature female (?) was in slightly better light.

4. This guy was taking a nap in Moremi Game Reserve, another Botswana national park. I was amused, since we have a cat who likes to sleep on her back; the big cats had many behavior aspects similar to the little cats we have at home, except slightly more dangerous.

5. And then there was this lion in Moremi defending his lunch from a pair of Nile crocodiles A lion's roar is very loud!

The last one is great. The first three, with marks of injuries to the nose, show how difficult life could be to survive in African wild.

Thanks very much!

It was an indescribably magical trip. And watching the lion spar with the crocodiles, with the crocs backing down, was a highlight!

I love the first photo, in significant part because of the scars he bears. Only about one in eight male lions reach adulthood; once there, it's not a bad life as the apex predator (note the photo of the adult male sleeping on its back in the sun; I suspect not too many other creatures in the bush will do that), but it's not easy getting there!

We were reminded constantly that we were witnessing real survival out there; nobody cleans up the bones after a meal, which are everywhere (particularly elephant bones, which can be too heavy to carry off to a safer place). We saw a group of four leopard sub-adult siblings stalk and eat a kudu. We saw animals hunting and being hunted. And animals hoping to avoid being hunted.

It was worth all the trouble and expense!
