p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · What size Pelican case for 800mm f5.6 ef-l mounted on camera

I am looking for advice on the best case to use with a mounted Canon 800mm EF-L on a 1DX Mark II - hood included. I was looking at the new Pelican Air 1615 - it is long enough but seems like it may be too close in depth (9.3") as the lens is nearly 8" in diameter with the hood mounted.

Does anyone have any experience or alternative case recommendations?

Thanks,

Grover Larkins

Hi Grover -
That is a big combination. Sometimes, I ask B&H for advice, if they carry the big Pelikan cases.
Soft cases are easier to come by. Are you planning it as checked baggage, thus the need for a hard sided case?
I have a big combo too, but would never check it. Just makes me nervous.
Cheers,
John

If you're transporting the combo out of your sight or reach I'd highly advise leaving the camera and lens separated. There have been many horror stories about lens mount damage due to impact forces which put undue stress on that mount.

Personally when travelling by air and with the carry on I always keep the camera body and lens separate. Of course when just using my Tenba long lens bag/backpack locally or just hiking around I keep them together as I'm better able to control the impact or shock that may occur to the connected combo, plus it's in a more ready to shoot mode.

No idea about the case size versus the camera lens combo. I do remember that the 1510? was close enough to be tight enough I've opted not to use my 500L in this case.

As mentioned above I'd call B&H or Pelican and ask for their expert advice.
