p.2 #1 · p.2 #1 · Replacement for 24-105 II

24-105 has huge barrel distortion at the wide end, and while easily corrected that robs resolution. Also extremities are average at best. My 24-105L was a pretty good performer even fairly sharp wide open, but to wait several years and not see any optical improvement in the vII was lame, even that huge barrel distortion was only reduced a little. I can see a big difference between the 24-70 f/2.8 II and the 24-105L and if you are using the 5DsR, the 24-105L (I or II) won’t hold up as well, I only used mine a few times on the 5DsR and sold it ASAP.

My 24-105 v1 is underwhelming. Some folks seem to have good copies. My 17-40 is also underwhelming, but my 16-35F4 is EXCELLENT. I often grab that before the Zeiss 21. I also like the 70-200 F4, but I'm still evaluating the 100-400 v2...I'm starting to think that air turbulents are softening my distant shots. I also need to test the lens without a filter. My relatively close shots are great.

With all that said, I like the sharpness of single focal length lenses, and I wish they'd make 'em slightly slower so they'd be lighter for hiking 10 miles. I absolutely love my Contax 50 1.7. O...M...G, What a wonderful lens. Also, my old Nikkor 105 is really nice. I love the small sharp lenses.

In comparison, the 24-105 is not very exciting and tends to get used for family photos. I'd really like a sharp 24-70 or 24-105, so i'm curious about the 24-70F4 or the VII 2.8, but I'm gun shy. Fool me once, and I'll buy a Zeiss (or Contax) 25mm

Does Zeiss have any 24-70 or 24-105 EF lenses yet?

Mainly I'm using the 24-70/4 IS to save weight, but the 24-70/2.8 II is a good lens too.

I don't believe Zeiss has released a stills zoom yet...

Another vote for the 24-70/4IS. Together with the 16-35/4IS and 70-200/4IS it makes for a great travel combo, especially when coupled with a 40/2.8STM or a faster prime. The 24-70/4IS is very sharp and versatile, and light compared to the f/2.8 variants.

Well, not for Canon. Zeiss makes a variety of high-quality, full-frame, autofocus zooms, for the Sony A DSLR and Sony E mirrorless mounts.

A-mount DSLR,

If you don't mind moving a bit then how about the EF 28mm f/2.8 IS ?
I've never used one, but from what I hear its a great lens.

I would also suggest getting Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens like a few members already suggested along with downgrading to EF-24-105mm IS STM for casual family photo & video.

I do wish Canon offer an Nano USM version, but this one optically is not bad and perfect for travel. And I do hope you can still return the EF 24-105mm IS USM II

Currently street price for EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM is $879 (probably Canadian stores)

Can probably find a white box version or ask around.

I know Zeiss lets Sony put their badge on the side, but those are Sony zooms

Highly recommend 16-35 f/4L IS, very nice lens and pricing is very good by L standards, a bargain IMO. IS is a huge bonus!

Maybe, you should ask Zeiss to take them off their web site.

I used the 24-105 v1 for years and got many great images from it but often saw a slight softness where I felt it should have been sharper.

I got the 24-70 f4 and have been very impressed with the sharpness on my 5DsR.
What I do miss is the extra reach of the 105 as I shoot a lot at max zoom.

I've had a 24-70 2.8 for a few years now, married to Canon FF bodies, and would have a LOT of trouble selling it. And I do family stuff, and a little landscape.

if I were to spend the same money again, and didn't need it for sports too, I would be tempted by 24-70 f/4 IS + 35 f/2 IS. same price, maybe even a bit cheaper.

Per Canon Rumors there is a 28-70 f/2.8 IS ( AKA The Holy Grail if the optics are great ) in the works.

The 24-105 ( original ) was fine with the 5D II, not so fine with the Mark IV, or at least I don't find it so.

I really like the 24-70 f4L IS. It has less distortion at 24mm, is sharper and a tiny bit more compact.
