Recently had a chance to visit this humbling memorial. It consists of beautifully maintain grounds with the graves of 8301 American soldiers killed in WW II plus a wall with the names of 1722 Americans whose remains were never recovered. This is but one of the many similar cemeteries throughout Europe as well as other areas of the world.

Each grave is "remembered" by a volunteer Dutch family; many are in contact with survivors of the service member and their families. There is a waiting list of Dutch families to participate in remembering the deceased.

The cemetery has a special service every Memorial Day with the number of visitors limited to 10,000 for that particular day. While we were there a steady flow of visitors walked through the grounds.

Thanks for looking,

Bob

Really nice series, Bob. Love the story behind this place, and the intimacy of that first image.

Must be some staggering emotions related to these cemeteries and memorials, just from the shear scope of them. Nice tribute Bob!

Thank each of you for your comments and thoughts.

Yes, a humbling visit. We can view pictures, movies and the like but until you personally experience the reality and scope, feel the weight of emotion, there is no adequate description. The atmosphere was solemn and respectful, each visitor privately associating meaning with their lives, both past and present, especially since Holland was occupied during WW II. While we were there a young Dutch gentleman came with a bouquet of flowers to place at a marker. Seeing the name, unit, hometown, and date of death on each marker carried its own weight.

There are two long granite walls running the length of the mall, listing the names of over 1700 service members whose remains were never recovered, many from various bomber groups and parachute battalions.

Best,

Bob

What an amazing memorial/cemetery. You have done a great job photographing it Bob.
I remember seeing a similar cemetery many years ago in Budapest, but just from a bus as I was traveling through the town.

Thank you for your thoughts and comments. I think one of the most revealing moments was in looking at the markers, I realized all were contemporaries of my father, who also served in WW II. That made it a bit more personal.

Best,

Bob
