Maybe it is intended for B&W. I am expecting nice micro contrast from 2.8 on and nice bokeh at 1.2. But I expect also some kind of color frindging from 1.2 till 2.8... Lets see.

Finally Cosina updated their release announcement with the specific date, 10/5. Until today they had only stated that it is expected to start shipping sometime in October. I'm looking forward to getting mine on 5th with my pre-booking at Map Camera.

Release date was now updated here:
http://www.cosina.co.jp/
http://www.cosina.co.jp/seihin/voigtlander/e-mount/e-40mm/index.html

I didn't notice much fringing when I tried the lens back at CP+... Anyway, I'm not expecting it to be like 65/2 APO but rather something in the style of 35/1.2 Nokton or 35/1.7 Ultron, but improved. I had the 35/1.2 v1, but sold it earlier this year since 35/1.7 Ultron had practically replaced it as my main manual / smaller 35mm lens along with FE 35/1.4.

I'd like somewhat less field curvature. Ultron is very sweet wide open but corner-to-corner sharpness at infinity would be nice to have earlier than f8. I don't use any filters with my Ultron and I basically always use f8 for infinity shots.

I hope the new Nokton is fully usable wide open, gets extra sharp by f1.8 or so and has good corner to corner sharpness at infinity from f4 of at least f5.6. Then I'd be perfectly happy with it.

Currently enjoying my recently acquired Konica Hexanon 50/2.4 LTM, it's very nice and sharp.

Can the Hexanon 50/2.4 LTM be collapsed on the Sony A7/A9 series cameras? I have the M-Hexanon 50/1.2 and 50/2 and the Konishiroku 50/1.9 LTM, all of which I really like. But I've been reluctant to buy a collapsible lens that can't be collapsed.

Yes it can be collapsed into my A9 (I didn't test with my A7II or A7r but would think it can be collapsed into them as well). It doesn't extend very deep beyond the adapter into the camera, just a little bit. However I don't like the collapsing mechanics so much, when extending the lens the front can end up in a couple of different positions and the aperture selector doesn't always line up at the center along with the focus selector. Somehow depends on how the front is rotated when collapsed as it can be rotated around in either direction in collapsed position. My Heliar 40/2.8 collapses and extends in a more simple & steady manner. So I have been mostly leaving the lens in extended position all the time as it's not too long that way either.

I have Konica M-Hexanon 35/2 & 90/2.8 in addition to this. Would love to have 50/1.2, 60/1.2 LTM and 35/2 UC-Hexanon but those are priced a bit too high for my budget and not sure how 35/2 UC compares to M 35/2.

Some samples from A9 + 50/2.4 LTM if interested (they are PP'd):

I'm sure it'll have less field curvature on Son y cameras; most of the FC on the ultron when used on Sony is just down to being designed for a thinner filter stack, and the 40 is presumably designed for the Sony stack...

Yes, that's what I'm counting on as well. The FC is really the only downside with the Ultron + I don't love the focusing ring style on 35/1.7 and 50/1.5 vintage line as much as the more traditional CV focusing rings. And it will be nice to have close focusing capability without needing a helicoid adapter.

Thanks for the samples!. I really like the bokeh in the close-up shot of the hand (yours?) holding the coffee cup.

Thanks! Yes, that's my hand. I shot that utilizing the Voigtländer close focus adapter, focusing as close as it could go with the lens at closest end and adapter fully extended. The lens remains really sharp at close range.

Forgive my ignorance, but why would Voigtlander design lenses without rounded aperture blades? Maybe Ive just been spoiled, but I can't see ever being totally happy with bokeh that looks like this at f/2:

Because rounded aperture blades give much worse sunstars.
There's a tradeoff between rounded OOF spreads, and crisp sunstars.
For some purposes (typically but not onlyl landscape) I much prefer 10 or 12 straight blades for sunstars.
In other cases 9 or 11 rounded is best (typically but not only portraits).

Ideally I'd like a really premium lens to have two aperture mechanisms you can switch between...

Just received an email from the Australian CV distributor advising that the Nokton 40/1.2 will be available for purchase next week for AUD1395 (approximately USD1091, GBP816, EUR930). I expected it to be less expensive than the CV APO-Lanthar 65/2 but what would I know?

That price AUD1395 (approx. 123K yen based on Google currency conversion) is pretty well aligned with Japan street price, which is 119K yen (including tax) at the best stores. In Japan it's also more expensive than CV APO-Lanthar 65/2 (MRSP 135K for 40/1.2 vs. 120K for APO-Lanthar).

I suppose APO-Lanthar was priced lower than it could have been, maybe there was less certainty of market demand before launch.

Still the 40/1.2 pricing is quite closely aligned with e.g. 35/1.2 II current pricing in Japan etc. The price is also pretty close to CV 10/5.6 and 12/5.6 e-mount lenses here. 10/5.6 was even pricier initially.

Thanks for the informative pricing info. I just checked the local price of the M-mount CV Nokton 35/1.2 II and it's AUD1495 so I guess that makes the new E-mount 40/1.2 a bargain.

I pre-ordered (and paid) mine last week from Australian Distributor Mainline Photographics:

http://mainlinephoto.com.au/voigtlander-40mm-f-1-2-nokton-lens-e-mount-new-product/

They have pre-ordered a batch of 15 units from the manufacturer, so hopefully they will get their full allocation. I was first off the block, so I hope to receive mine next week.
Hopefully the Voigtlander FE 40mm f1.2 will be a good performer, though quietly, from sample images I've seen, I am concerned about potential (and likely) Loca and nervous bokeh issues.
We'll soon find out.

Ideally I'd like a lens to have drop-in stops, so you can have a perfectly round aperture at every f-stop (or a perfectly octagonal one for sunstars etc.)

Happily, Mainline Photographics have an extremely generous (by Australian standards) 30-day unconditional return policy so you have absolutely nothing to lose by pre-ordering. I hope it exceeds your expectations.

The Fuji 56/1.2 is $999. Also, you're comparing against portrait lenses, not wide normals.

As an aside, I can't wait to see more samples. The early samples aren't as good as I'd like, but also not terrible. I'm in the market for a fast lens in this range, and it'll probably come down to this or the 35/1.7.
