Nice...
(this is not a test of sharpness: an f2.8 exposure is blended in the middle of the flower, as at f1.2, while sharp, the DOF is so thin that the flower is blurred with the occasional sharp spot of an anther...)

Might as well get the zony if you shoot at f/2.8 +.

Ok completely sincere question: for what reason would you choose this lens if you're going to mostly shoot it at f/2.8? Or were you not aware that it had pretty severe LoCA before purchasing it? From everything I've read about the lens since its announcement it's been understood that to maintain this particular oof rendering a compromise of moderate LoCA would have to be made.

The rendering looks spectacular and the sharpness across the frame already attained at f4 as shown in that single high ISO example is very promising. if the lens performs well at infinity then I'll be ecstatic.

Happily my Voigtlander FE 40mm f1.2 arrived this morning. I've just done some quick basic tests.

First Impressions:

1. The lens is gorgeous, chunky and weighty in a good way. You feel your money is well spent.
2. Handling is lovely, focus ring is perfectly dampened, and the aperture ring is easy to find and adjust whilst keeping the camera to your eye.
3. Wide open performance is good, but unfortunately LoCa is prominent in the centre and edges. Happily this disappears and is unnoticeable from f2.2, which is the sweet spot for this lens.
4. Vignetting is surprisingly low at all apertures, distortion is minor pincushion.
5. Rendering is gorgeous, though the bokeh is just average. The bokeh has noticeable onion rings and green outlining, and the straight blades become noticeable at f2.8
6. On the upside, sun stars are awesome from f2.2 😊

So far, I love this thing.
If you're ok with dealing with LoCa in post, this lens is a winner guys 👍

Sounds like a little post work more wide open. Sounds fairly normal for a lens this fast. Onion rings bug me but will see. I have high hopes for it.

F2.2 is pretty good for a lens this fast. I was guessing f2. Sony FE 35 1.4 I think from memory is about 2.8 for CA to go away naturally.

I’m real curious about centeral sharpness when it really kicks in.

That's one of the CV 35/1.7 Ultron advantage. It's absent of onion rings on specular highlights. (despite of having an aspherical element)

Agree Fred I see no onion rings on the CV 35 1.7 and for me a big plus for this lens. Not to mention it’s a laser wide open.

I tend to think overall for having so many lenses over the years they are taking a classic look lens and applying some asphericals to update it. Onion rings can be one of those downfalls. Cats eye as well.

Going to be interesting as far as build, feel and handling sounds a lot like our CV 65 APO which is just about perfect in my mind.

I need to download the Raws myself and check things out, just got busy today. Looking forward to you folks posting more. Keep plugging away, we appreciate the efforts.

So far just to report, no time to post samples to back up the claims;

Bokeh: gorgeous. really. It's the surprising upside.
Sharpness: my copy is centred, but takes f8 for quite good corners, f5.6 for tolerable.
F4 for midframe roughly = centre.
Stopped down centre and midframe as good as it gets; corners get fine but not great.
LoCA is real, but not as bad as I feared, and best of all there's none of the muddy micro-spherochromatism that messes up detailed areas in front or behind the plane of focus is lenses which are otherwise as well corrected for axial colour.

haven't looked at flare at all yet, or coma, or anything else...

Which makes me even more curious about how they've approached the design of the yet-to-be-released Nokton Classic 35/1.4.

If I had to guess, based on what they say about it, I'd think it's just a minimal correction for the sensor stack (like Loxia 2/35 from ZM Biogon 2/35). So maybe it'll look on Sony how the old one looks on Leica.

From further testing of this lens on my a7rii today,
In bright daylight, there appears to be a boost of micro-contrast at f1.7, with no noticeable LoCa at short distances. Sharpness in the centre peaks at f2.2, with no noticeable LoCa at long distances.

Bokeh is lovely at short distances, but only average at long distances (starts to look a little nervous).

My Fotasy and K&F Concept Leica M to E adapters weigh 50 grams though. TAP is correct at 133g.

Another option is the Voigtlander VM-E Close Focus Adapter (125g) that I actually prefer to the TAP (which I carry but only use very rarely) unless I must have AF.

Details of minimum distances with various lenses can be found on Philip Reeve's review : https://phillipreeve.net/blog/review-voigtlander-vm-e-close-focus-adapter/

As someone else mentioned, there would have to be a really compelling reason to buy this over the 35/1.7 Ultron which, a year down the line, I am still in love with !

OK Rolling review commenced: infinity and portrait distance resolution, and first work on bokeh, and a few samples that are just what I could manage this morning....

Very nice review so far Loving the portrait shots in your review especially, and the first set of flowers and kitchen.

I'm a bit surprised by the edge results at infinity as my impression on A9 is better from my limited testing so far, though based on cityscapes. Wondering if A7rII makes a lot of difference. I still have an A7r too (no version II) so I might do some quick infinity trials with that during the weekend to see if there's a clear difference with my lens.
