It honestly is a freaking hassle and the bigger problem is no one has stepped to the plate with a great 35 F2 that's just awesome at everything. We have to have two 35s pretty much to get everything done . They are all really good but everyone of them has a fault somewhere. It's fall now and Photoplus is coming maybe we will see some action.

But I'm not complaining just the nature of the beast.

I've been wondering whether there isn't a strategy to this "35mm madness": By not releasing a great e-mount 35 2, Sony, Zeiss and CV have forced plenty of us to cycle through a whole bunch of lenses and/or lens combination. Zeiss and CV probably have sold quite a few CV 35 1.2 ii, 35 1.7 and 35 1.4 zm to e-mount users, in addition to the Loxia.

You forgot all those sales of the RX1.

Personally, I don't believe in conspiracy theories...

So i got to thinking late last night which is dangerous since i had a few.

One thing I am is determined and stubborn as hell. So with that I was thinking about the front filter setup. My problem was 46-52 step up ring does not have enough thread to add a retaining ring right inside that so i had to put a blank 52mm in than install the front filter. What that does is push the front filter away from the front element so a lot of space between the glass lets say. Early this morning I figure I wanted the front filter as close as I can get to the front element of the lens. So I grabbed the 46-55 step up ring put in a nice fitting O ring to keep it center than I was able somehow to get a 55-52 step down than a 52mm retaining ring. What this did was put the front filter flat on the step ring and less space.

From testing this morning it looks better, i have not compared it to the old mount shots yet but this is a better setup and I may even try a 46-52 step up than a 52-49 step down and see if I can make this smaller. remember the Front filter is 50mm.

Okay moving from that to testing. Ill copy what i wrote Fred in a email as he is downloading now.

Here is what i did

I think its a lot better out of the gate.

But here is how it goes 3 series from 1.7,2,2.8,4,5.6,8,11

First series focused at infinity right at the tin roof building
Second series is directly in the corners. Obvious center is out
Third series i split the difference

So On my lens infinity the first series is right at the start of the infinity symbol
Corners or second series is just past 5m
Third series is in the middle of the two

here are the Raws

Okay than I discovered something else that I totally forgot about from my Medium format days is corner sharpening in C1 . I used to have to sharpen corners for my 28mm lens. I say this this morning and works fantastic

Ill post a sample here in a minute

So full image sharpened
First crop corner sharpened
Second crop NOT corner sharpened

This is a straight infinity focus from the first series at F 5.6

So you have a little more control on your corners . This works really nice and you can adjust to taste or not. Nice thing with C1 i can make this adjustment to one file and copy to the whole batch or a certain amount . You can even make a preset and apply on import. So some ways to skin the cat as they say

Do you think the O ring trick would impact the infinity focus? I've got my front lens in a 52mm sandwich.

No it's more just for centering in setup.

@Makten, thanks for requesting this...

Here are a few more crops comparing the FE 35/1.4 ZA vs CV 35/1.7 rendering @ f/1.7 (at 1:1)

Note: These crops were grabbed from the center area because as we move away from the center, the CV's field curvature gets a bit crazy and the edges end up very sharp. That's because I'm testing without the front-lens that corrects for FC on the Sony sensor. However, since I only used center crops, these results are accurate.

Keep in mind that the 35/1.4 ZA was stopped down to f/1.7 and therefore will show similar blur to the CV's crops. However, at f/1.4, it's capable of much more blur.

I tested a many distances: 1m, 1.5m, 3 and 5 meters. The light was VERY harsh and the background very busy (foliage). Silent shutter was used to avoid rendering issues caused by EFCS.

The CV tends to slightly overexpose the scene.

This is a lighting and background nightmare for both lenses, so a torture test.

Which one do you prefer?

5 meter distance

3 meter distance

1.5 meter distance

2 meter distance

CV seems to have slightly more blur in OOF areas

Just for curiosity, here is how the edges look in comparison. The CV's FC is so massive, without the front-lens correction, it's just comical.

You must have the 5m front lens when using the CV at close and infinity distance otherwise your images will look funky.

And another for the curious bunch. Sony FE 35/1.4ZA rendering difference between f/1.7 and f/1.4...
...Super harsh lighting and complex background.

I like the FE quite a bit better at the longer focus distances, to my eye, but neither is spectacular.

Yea it's funky without the front filter. In closer distances it's actually really nice looking.

I'm pretty happy now with lens and setup. Probably done testing unless somebody wants me to try something. Next week I'll be shooting in LA of cityscapes. Taking the Llaowa 15, 12-24,CV 35,65. I'll bring the Batis 135 in a separate bag just in case.

I got another 28 F2 and like always it's a F 8 corners lens. It's staying home. I bought it for on camera flash stuff.

They have similar rendering to my eyes which is a praise for the CV 35/1.7.
I see the FE's OOF areas slightly smoother when checking the full images but that's probably due to the CV not being PCX corrected.
The CV is only 290g with adapter and focusing is very precise. I also give a slight advance to the CV for resolution/contrast...that's another praise since it's wide open. None do well as far as axial color correction but for the size the CV is actually good. (Both similar but I'd say the FE is slightly less corrected at f/1.7)

I need to test if the OOF corners are entirely fixed with the 5m lens though. (Same issue with the ZM 35/1.4 but to a lesser degree)

I can try a few things if someone wants me too. One issue here with my testing this lens is this sun. It's about as harsh as it gets. Put this lens in a nice overcast sky and it's going to be butter looking. All that OOF will be less contrast and just blend better. Fred's samples above are all sun as well so we are really seeing maybe the worst lighting conditions for that smoothness in tone. Just that change maybe quite a dramatic change

The CV like the ZM are higher contrast , high saturation pop lenses but if we put them in a different softer light it will change a lot. I know thinking of portrait type shots we do NOT want to be in this light.

BTW:
Here are the size differences between these 2 lenses:

Weight: (as shown on image)

CV 35/1.7 Ultron + adapter = 290g
FE 35/1.4 ZA = 630g

However, I consider the 35/1.4 ZA 'light' for a high performance 35mm f/1.4 lens.

Fred you got the adapter where does infinity hit on the lens without the PCX.

On mine and these adapters have some variance. My backup is as loose as you can get.

My infinity hits with PCX right at the beginning of the infinity mark

So, here is true infinity without the PCX. Am I going to make it?
