Had a work conference over the weekend in Melbourne, Australia. Upon arrival late Thursday afternoon, I went to St Kilda pier where there is a Fairy Penguin colony where you can sometimes see these tiny penguins and at the moment there are chicks. There are large boulders where they live under that adjoin the sand and the ocean. Not always guaranteed to see them, but this little chick briefly popped his head out from between the rocks to take a peek at the outside world. A difficult shot to get as I had to get the 70-200 f2.8E FL VR lens between the fence bars and there is little room for maneuvering it so as I could shoot in between the rocks. I had to try a number of openings before I managed to get the right position and it was almost pitch black in there. It was a quick panic to get the shot and the D850 was set to maximum ISO of 25,600 from factory, I had not changed it.
This is the result. It was about 1 stop underexposed and cropped about 30%. In reality, you could say that we are talking about ISO51,200 and a 30% crop on top, making it possibly look like ISO66,500?
Shot at f8 to get decent DOF at this almost minimum focus distance of about 1.5mts. I used as low a shutter speed as I dared at 1/200sec as the little guy was moving his head about. I also had little time as there were a number of people with smart phones trying to get their photos! Many wanted to see mine and compare it to theirs. Suffice to say mine looked fantastic on the rear screen, their's looked like a water color, no detail!
Run through Capture One Pro 10 RAW conversion and saved to 16bit TIFF. Opened in Photoshop and run through Noiseware noise reduction, cropped 30% and then saved.

Here's another shot at f5.6 to get the ISO down and I took the punt at 1/100sec as I already had the shot with the first photo. Luckily it seemed to work ok.
