i hadn't been to the grand canyon is 20+ years (minus tuweap).. where does the time go My wife had never been, so with all the fires going on up north, we decided to visit both rims of the GC.

second trip out wth the super under rated C/Y 35-70 3.4 Zeiss lens. I swear it is sharper than my 14-24 was. It certainly has more character!

The lightning shot was taken the night before the sunrise. I need to get a lightning trigger! During sunrise, lighting was striking everywhere. Just too bright and quick to capture.

First shot at 35mm, ISO 600 (I think), wide open. Second shot was 35mm, ISO 100 and f/8. All single shots (glad to get back to single exposures). Still need to get rid of some noise on both images.

thanks for looking.

I was out of the canyon last year for one day. I really want to go back and spend a week out there probably during monsoon season with a dream of capturing a lightning strike like you did. It's an outstanding shot! The second shot is wonderful also, but I can't keep my eyes off the lighting strike. How many shots did you take waiting to catch the strike, and what was the time duration of each shot?

well i kind of was lucky timing it off of sound. it was a slow moving storm, and usually after thunder, it would lighting within 2- 4 seconds. I probably took 45-50 shots, and got maybe 15 shots with "lightning" - but a lot were cloud to cloud. this was the only ground strike i got. lightning triggers are totally worth it, but are kind of expensive

thanks for the comments

Neat work, Dustin. I like the subdued colors of the 2nd.

Good work!!

One caveat regarding triggers is that they tend to miss the first main stroke or pulse. And since much of the branching lightning usually (not always!) occurs during this initial blast, you tend to catch a lot of "stick" bolts. Yea, triggers are great when shooting against a bright sky, but once the exposure becomes long enough to 'machine-gun,' doing so is usually the better option. Just try not to think about all that wear and tear on the shutter....

Hey Dustin. Awesome you got to go back with your wife!

That first ima is loaded with POWER! Congrats on that. Be careful out there. I got knocked down by lightning on the North rim a year ago! Could have been over for me! Also the rule is that 5 seconds is a mile. and lightning has been known to strike 10-15 miles away in some circumstances. So actually there is nowhere "safe" when dealing with this raw type of power. Even in our cars.

The first is gorgeous and terrifying at the same time. Plenty of drama!
Congrats Dustin!
