Hi all, getting ready for St. Louis this weekend. Just tested out my Seymore Solar filter for the 500mm F/4. This shot was with the 1DXII, 1000mm F/8 @ 1/200 iso 100, 2XIII. I caught some sunspots on the lower left. Real tricky getting focus and stability. Didn't realize Id be almost standing on my head. Do you think I'm on the right track? Any tips??

Yes you're ready, great shot, thanks for sharing exposure details

The following next total eclipse will be on July 2, 2019 - in South America

May want to ditch the extender if you plan on capturing much of the corona.

Ok so here is my new plan, set up #1- 1DXII w/ 500mm bare, tripod gimbal head, remote cable. use this till full eclipse, remove filter, shoot bracketed sequence shots @5 brackets till over then continue with filter on and cable. #2 use my second camera 5DIV w/100-400II on tripod with the built in intervalometer, just not sure how to handle this one when it gets to the corona. (screw on 77mm filter) maybe just adjust the iso. Does this make sense

Here is a basic plan that most eclipse observers probably use.
Pretty simple

Not sure if you'll have time to manually deal with two cameras, assuming that's what you were planning to do. May want to concentrate on just one & get as many frames as you can. I plan to bracket 7 frames @ 2 EV each during totality using an intervalometer on my 6D & 100-400 II + 1.4x III. Then, I've never done this.

Good app. Contains a practice movie with which to practice.

Looks like you are ready!...A time lapse from start to end would be great but could be tricky...

I plan to stack my many ND filters. How many would be enough? x8, x16, x24?

a total of 14 stops of ND should do the trick, I gave it a trial yesterday and it looked pretty good.
Good luck everyone

Not safe,

You need the following in front of ANY optics

http://agenaastro.com/solar-astronomy/white-light-solar-filters/solar-film-sheets/shopby/baader_planetarium.html

Unfortunately, at this time, everything is sold out.

I got an 8x11 sheet of the stuff for $37 a month ago.
I made my own filters, per their instructions.

Here is the filter rating chart. YOU NEED THE LAST ONE LISTED!!

ND filter ratings

In photography, ND filters are quantified by their optical density or equivalently their f-stop reduction. In microscopy, the transmittance value is sometimes used. In astronomy, the fractional transmittance is sometimes used (eclipses).

ND1num ND.num Lens Stops % transmittance
Area
ND 0.3 ND2 1/2 0.3 1 50% 0.5
ND 0.6 ND4 1/4 0.6 2 25% 0.25
ND 0.9 ND8 1/8 0.9 3 12.5% 0.125
ND 1.8 ND64 1/64 1.8 6 1.563% 0.015625
ND 2.0 ND100 1/100 2.0  6 2⁄3 1% 0.01
ND 2.1 ND128 1/128 2.1 7 0.781% 0.0078125
ND 2.4 ND256 1/256 2.4 8 0.391% 0.00390625
ND 2.7 ND512 1/512 2.7 9 0.195% 0.001953125
ND 3.0 ND1024 1/1024 3.0 10 0.1% 0.001
ND 3.3 ND2048 1/2048 3.3 11 0.049% 0.00048828125
ND 3.6 ND4096 1/4096 3.6 12 0.024% 0.000244140625
ND 3.8 ND6310 1/6310 3.8  12 2⁄3 0.016% 0.000158489319246
ND 3.9 ND8192 1/8192 3.9 13 0.012% 0.0001220703125
ND 4.0 ND10000 1/10000 4.0  13 1⁄3 0.01% 0.0001
ND 5.0 ND100000 1/100000 5.0  16 2⁄3 0.001% 0.00001

You will need that up to just before TOTAL eclipse and again just after.
During Total eclipse the filter is removed to expose for the corona.

I did it with ND x20 and -4. I bet I will need a color filter to make it look like the sun in the morning or evening.

Lee Solar filter - 4x4 inch or 100x100mm - is a 20 stop solar filter. Other solar filters are 14 stops, and others different still.
ND only filters won't stop ultraviolet or infrared light. There are stories of damage to sensor even with ND used, and not much time used during the process.
I have live view focused on the rising/setting sun, but only during the minutes/seconds before the sun setting - without any filter. I wouldn't do it for midday sun, as the eclipse 2017 will be. My sun was always white.
Michael's yellow sun on the top looks great. Mine was washed out in my landscape shots because the emphasis was on the landscape, and sun had to be white. Here on top the sun is great, rest will be black.

ND, does that means it filters every wave length. That is the meaning of Neutral Density.?
"a neutral-density filter, or ND filter, is a filter that reduces or modifies the intensity of all wavelengths"

In your link above it also says.... last sentence here:
"In practice, ND filters are not perfect, as they do not reduce the intensity of all wavelengths equally. This can sometimes create color casts in recorded images, particularly with inexpensive filters. More significantly, most ND filters are only specified over the visible region of the spectrum and do not proportionally block all wavelengths of ultraviolet or infrared radiation."

Everyone opt out on the safe side both for yourself and the gear.
I believe a telescope solar filter could be a "makeshift" fix if no camera filters are available. Note: :makeshift"

So I should remove my really expensive ND filters and get some cheapy solar filters instead?
I bet we really can not know unless all and each of us invest in sophisticated gears to check the filters we have.

Lee Big Stopper 10 stop is $125, Lee Little Stopper 6 stop is $125, Lee Solar filter 20 stop is $160, those are the ones I would use. Full sun: 20 stop, half sun: 10 stop, total eclipse: 6 stop or 3 stop. The exposure will vary a lot when sun power is removed, but on full sun power midday I would use a 20 stop. Exposure will tell you when it's time for lesser ND. That's what I would do.

I would prefer Seymour Solar for big lenses like 500/600mm f/4, screw-on from outside/front, they are about $120.
The thin films I don't know.
Pat had a good experience with one: https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1504556

This LEE article, included with LEE 20 stop Solar filter, talks about blocking infrared as a feature of specifically their Solar filter, as well as removing the filter during totality/corona
