Thank you for posting. This confirms my findings, along with Roger Cicala's tests (chart, below) I mostly shoot these lenses at 200mm f2.8 and I have been getting sharp shots with the Canon II and soft shots with the Sony GM (portrait shooting). It gets worse the further from the center you get. This is a HUGE disappointment as I returned the Sony lens and now do not have a good indoor sports lens (I mostly use 50mm, 85mm and 135mm primes for portraits, anyway).
Given that Nikon (V3), Canon and Tamron (V2, which I tested on the 5DSR) all have sharper lenses (at 200mm), I sure hope that Sony will introduce a reworked version II in the future. This is a key lens for professional shooters and not many will be satisfied paying $2,600 for this level of performance, IMHO....Show more →
I use the 70-200 GM professionally (posed portraiture and weddings/events) and its fine. I owned the Canon version back in my 5DIII days, and it might be shaper if I compared the two side by side, but I didn't bother doing so even when I had both the GM and the Canon at the same time because adapting the Canon to my a7rII was a nightmare. Looking at things comprehensively though, the GM mounted to a Sony body has better IQ overall, and more importantly for paid work, the AF is significantly more accurate wide open. Eye-AF is a big deal for me, and I'd rather have critically in focus shots on a softer lens than OOF shots on a sharper lens. I'll take the GM on a Sony body over the L on a Canon body any day of the week regardless of what test charts say.
