Here is a few. Wondering what is a better way to shoot a bunch of birds all at one? Would a lens with a short infinity like a 135 mm APO Ziess on a d500 or nikon1 work better? I didn't want to shoot f22 because of the light.

Very nice set Morris,

There are many approaches. Going to something in the 50 to 100 range at f8 works quite well

I didn't have a lot of time to try things as the birds got spooky each time I leaned out to shoot. It is a place where nobody is allowed to go (I was checking osprey nests and was allowed in). Next time I will take a car with a sunroof and try a few more things (several cameras in the front seat). I didn't realize they were endangered in IL so I'm the luckiest photographer in IL I suppose.

It looks like you are in there nesting area. Late June and Early July is the time to be there. Be prepared to be bombed with poop or pecked on the head as they are very defensive of there nests. If you can catch the colony blast off when a predator comes it with a wide lens It's quite impressive.

Thanks for the tip. I think we'll be trying to make the area a little more appealing to them to enlarge the colony. We've got several plants with similar areas and may try attracting more terns. The good thing about being a T&E species helper/volunteer is the photography opportunities that come with it. I should be the only one with access to these birds for monitoring so I'm guessing they'll be many opportunities for pictures next summer.

I have some more from today I took with a Prime MF lens on a Nikon1. The biologist forgot his camera and was using my D500. I'll post a few of those I took when processed.

It ends up this is a staging area and not a nesting colony so they'll only be pictures in early August for next year.

The MF shots didn't come out so well especially when shooting thru a windshield on a jeep. The biologist that had my D500 is probably complaining about the 1000 pictures he's processing tonight. He seemed to enjoy the high fps. The driver of the jeep was giving the biologist the out of the window good shots.
