p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Vancouver Advice

I'll be in Vancouver the week of September 18, and looking for advice on where to photograph stuff over the extra two days I'll have before a conference.

Is Manning Park good that time of year? I see some workshops that occur at other times of the year...any suggestions for places within the park? Would I be better off heading in the other direction and over to Vancouver Island?

Ideally looking for larger mammals, but will go with birds or whatever fits the bill. I have 500mm and 300mm f4 primes, and full frame and crop sensor bodies. Just need a direction to point them

Regards,
Matt

A bit of course, but we enjoyed a Dehavilland Beaver flight over/around Vancouver/Vancouver Island and Harbor (20-30 min). Took off from the harbor airport, like $69 us, as I recall. Get a co-pilot seat if you can, got some amazing shots out the starboard window. I am not a wild life photographer per say, so nothing more to give you in that regard. Isolated Lighthouse, beautiful harbor shots, and Stanley island. A great experience. 1D Mark IV, w/70-200 2.8, was perfect.

If you're searching for larger mammals in close proximity to Vancouver, you're best off heading out to sea and focusing on marine mammals. There are a number of whale watching operators based in Vancouver or Richmond who offer great day rates.

If you're dead set on terrestrial mammals manning park is a good option, but you'll need to spend a bit of time on foot to reach the alpine - where you'll most likely bump into something interesting.

Vancouver Island is a beautiful place and if you visit the west side of the island and explore Pacific Rim National Park you'll have a good chance of spotting stunning wildlife.

Thanks Jake, will have a look

Thanks Big_Fish... Vancouver Island sounds like it would work the best, particularly in Tofino but it's just too far for the limited time I have. Unfortunately this trip backed up to another trip for work and leaving my wife alone with the kidd-o for much longer would yield bad results.

I'm probably going to do a whale trip in the end, and seeing I have a new moon that Tuesday...any suggestions on a good spot to get milkyway pictures if it is clear?

Thanks
Matt
