p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Another Take on Another Bend

As an admitted gooseneck obsessed photographer, I love trying to find new takes on newer gooseneck bends all throughout the SW either rarely photographed, or even sometimes never. Last year I had the wonderful privilege of going gooseneck crazy (various states) for a couple of months straight. Some of those who joined me may be able to attest to the uniqueness what they saw in some locations. Here is a shot that may look a little like Horseshoe Bend, but is not.

I usually like to go for the dramatic light in landscape but the unique take (11mm vertical) and soft light really spoke to me yesterday, to processing it. My girlfriend came in and wanted to see how I work on photos (a hobbyist photographer in her own right with almost no post processing skills) and even though I was done with it, I decided to start from raw/scratch and re-do it with her by my side, and the 2nd result (narrating to her the processes) I felt ended up being a little better than the first. It may not have the pizzazz (or more dramatic light) of some of my past work but for some reason I enjoyed the more realism in this one. Just simple soft afternoon light (not always easy to find in the SW).

To capture the image in the camera, I had to be right up to the very edge. The bottom of the frame is looking straight down almost 1000ft. After set up, I used my cable release to stay away from the edge.

What I love about the Canon 11-24 and the Voigtlander Heliar-Hyper Wide 10mm f/5.6 in the SW is that I can now get unique wide open verticals of some of these locations without stitching.

Sony A7R2
Canon 11-24@11mm
f/9
1/100th
ISO 250 (due to a little wind going on)
single shot

All the best, and great light to you! Thank you for looking.

The clarity is wonderful!
Not so sure about the 50/50 comp/horizon line.

Love the detail and composition, and colors too, but overall it seems a little too muted for an afternoon shot to me... almost like a long exposure from the middle of the night

Great. I'd love it a lot more as a square crop - cropping out most of the sky.

wow, that is a beautiful bend and i like the POV and daytime light you captured.....also agree about the square crop...it's a great sky but maybe a bit to much of it

Thank you everyone for the great feedback here. I knew the almost 50/50 crop would not fly with all photographers (it is almost a sin for us ) but I kept it because I liked how the clouds were driven into the upper corners (something I try to do as much as possible in my work). I definitely see other crop options though. So thank you very much for the feedback on that.

Beautiful, I like the reality of it, the sense of being there and not just looking at a pretty picture (although it is that as well)... Mike

Hey Mark,

This is really cool. The clouds got my attention so much that I didn't even notice that the horizon was across the middle of the frame.

Quite similar to the one at Page, AZ. And scary too about being too close to the edge. Very nice but I'm curious about the flat lighting. Too much of that and you get extreme reflection highlight from the water.

I like the clarity in the image, but would cut out much of the sky and the flat light is not really resonating with me. Would be great with more dramatic light.

Yes, I'd say similar but with tons of compositional possibilities quite unlike the other! This one excites me the most with the possibilities, yet is tough to get to!

As far as what some here may be viewing as "flat" light, I see more as special, soft semi diffused light, a bit unusual to mid day shots. That is what appealed to me to process the image. I also like to gravitate toward more surreal looks to my images, so I think this is one that will appeal to some but maybe not others. It is my favorite thing about the image aside from the sky interest going into the top corners of the image.

Thank you for taking time to reply here. I appreciate it.

This breaks convention in many ways, and it is stunning because of it, bravo!

What? No lightning? No rainbow - much less a double rainbow??

Kidding aside - As for the horizon I believe breaking rules if it's to your advantage. Sure you could crop out the top as an 8x10 (which I like as a rule of thumb for portrait landscapes) and be in the rule of thirds but then you would not have the clouds going into each corner, which is really neat! As others mention - this picture has great clarity with no distracting shadows.
