Canon NZ lent me a 6d mk2 for the weekend.

Really some great stuff you did. What glass and what are your thoughts?

The first one really gets me.

Rob, beautiful and serene images! While I like both quite a lot, the second image is my favorite. I love the quality of the reflection in that image.

Both with the 16-35/4L IS

I love the 6d2's usability. Not entirely convinced on the sensor ...

Would you jump from "Classic," to Mark 2? I have yet to shoot the f/4 but would love to see it hanging from my 6.

Thanks, J. R.

Colors are beautiful. Number two looks like you could walk right into it.

Operationally the m2 is a really great camera to shoot with. The 16-35 goes very well with it too

It's not the camera, it's the photographer!
Lovely set. Very nice texture on the foreground lead. (#1)

Very pleasing! I love the second picture a lot. There is a certain calmness given by the reflection. Thanks for sharing!

I think we should wait before judging the sensor.

Love the 2nd shot, Rob! The 1st seems a bit too magenta/blue, for my taste, and has a slight HDR crunch to the foreground.

From what I've heard, unlike the original 6D which bested both the 5D2 and even the 5D3 at both dynamic range and high ISO image quality, ...the 6D2 does NOT beat the 5D4 at base ISO DR, nor at high ISO noise levels. In my opinion, that's a huge blow to the 6D2 at least for landscape photography, in the face of competition from the likes of the Nikon D750 and Sony A7ii. Though I bet the 6D2 will indeed "defeat" both at extremely high ISO's.

This is according to both official word from Canon in some random Q&A, (maybe they were just misinformed, or following standard "push the upgrade" Canon protocol?) ...as well as the word of various real-world testers so far. (Which I am more likely to trust, since in real-world testing a superiority / inferiority has to be pretty substantial to actually get noticed early on...)

I'm still hoping the 6d2 has an improved DR like the 5d4 etc, I would be pretty shocked if it didnt. But its not looking good.

Its still a very usable tool but to ignore this aspect when they have the ability to address it is quite a large fuck you.

From what I understand, the on-chip ADC is what makes the biggest difference, and *was* what held Canon back for over a decade. Now that ADC is on-chip, we can expect them to eventually catch / surpass Sony / Nikon base ISO DR, I suspect. However Nikon / Sony has had well over a decade to perfect their banding-free shadows and on-chip ADC, so it won't happen for Canon overnight.

The 80D and 1DX2 were the first two cameras to have it, IIRC, and both exhibited a noticeable bump in base ISO DR. the 5DsR, in contrast, did not have on-chip ADC, and suffers the same lack of DR as always. The 5D4 and the other newer Canon Rebel etc. sensors all show significant incremental increases, and are beginning to approach the likes of the D810 / D750, but are still ~1 EV behind at ISO 100. The 6D2, unfortunately, will not beat the 5D4, though it may come close, which means that we'll have to wait another generation or two before base ISO DR is truly phenomenal.

Maybe they're saving their biggest leap forward for the 5DsR mk2? I'm pretty sure they could leave the MP count at 50, and just proclaim that it has industry-leading dynamic range at both base ISO and high ISO, ...and it would fly off the shelves just so long as their press release / early claims are proven true in early field testing...

I'm rooting for Canon, because I'd love to be able to just advise "pick whichever one feels right" to people who ask about which is best for landscape photography, but it appears the 6D2 is still only an incremental step forward towards that ultimate goal.
