p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · My first time - shooting Fireworks!

These were taken across the street at a neighbor's Fourth of July gathering for the community.

I learned a lot and by the time the fireworks were over, I was ready to get started! !
D810 with 14-24.....LOVE my D810! If I zoom in to 100% on these, the streaks of light and details are tack sharp! Amazingly sharp!

Most are f10, 2 seconds, ISO 125.

Very nice!
Did you use manual focus?
I used the 24-70 and set MF at infinity and aperture at f10-f12. Initial few pictures were blurry and had some trouble getting focus right. I used longer exposures(4-6sec). I really like how your pics turned out.

BEAUTIFUL!!! My poor dog was having bad anxiety attacks even on medication so I got to spend the evening in our basement calming him down;-( I don't feel like I missed out as much now after enjoying your photos. Thank you Karen

That's because very few lenses are actually calibrated to infinity anymore. Also, I doubt your fireworks were at infinity.

You are better off using your AF and focus on a ground structure the same distance (like I focused on the castle at Disneyland when I shot my fireworks last night and all of my fireworks were in focus even at f4). You could also use your AF and focus on one burst, then turn the focus to manual if you are concerned with the AF hunting focus.

On the first few bursts I used AF....then switched to manual focus. There were shot at ISO 125, 2 seconds at f10.

For some dogs, this is a really traumatic time! I'm sure they felt better with you by their side. Thank you for the kind comments.

Wonderful series. I read of one technique that I tried and it worked well. Full manual, f/8.0, bulb, ISO-200, -0.3EV (depends on camera). Focus early on the small fireworks or equal distant object, watch for the fire trail up and open the aperture with your remote and hold until the fireworks bloom is full size. A low stress method that lets you watch and enjoy the show too... Mike

Great series of shots.

One question, now that everything is digital. Has anyone else noticed the HUGE lag time between the time you open up the shutter, shoot the fireworks and then the camera is writing to the SD card?

I have FAST SD cards, but still seems like a long time before I can fire another shot.

Any suggestions?

Thanks, Jay. I haven't noticed any long delays on the D810, D500 or D5.
