No, that's not why. I have done some color IR imagery - e.g., see:

I realize that there is no right or wrong way to process and display color IR imagery, since we are mapping some of IR spectrum (which is not visible to us) to some of the visible light spectrum. By definition, no matter how we process things, color IR will not look natural. So, each of us makes up their own interpretations about how to display color IR. Since IR is closer to visible red, I prefer the IR portions to look closer to red, and the non IR portions to be blue (or desaturated). So, it is not my preference to have things like foliage look cool, while the sky looks red/orange (i.e., I prefer the channel swap). For this reason, I preferred your second image.
