p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Two rare butterflies After cold, rain and wind - sunshine!

There has not been sunshine here for a long while where I live.
We had a few lovely, but windy days few days ago and I got my camera out.
I found some butterflies that many of you may never see.
The white one, Parnassius mnemosyne f. perkele is very rare, inland Finland specific species. Euphydryas maturna, the more colored one, can be found in numbers in southeast Finland, but is rare and declining elsewhere in Europe.

I wish you find this interesting

Jarmo

Made some fine tuning, thanks Morris.

These are both quality images Jarmo. On the first, you might want to clone out the bright leaf entering in the upper left, then print the beautifle image.

Thanx everyone, appreciated!

Morris, I hurried with the photo, you are right, of course.

Outstanding nature photography!

Thank you for including information about a species' life history or its plight.

You are right about the plight of many lepidopterans in Europe.

Sir David Attenborough is deeply involved:

Without your post I would not have known the plight of these two Finland species.

Thank you so much!

Some females of rhe white butterflies are moved from territories with strong population to potentially suitable new ones. The challenge is to sensibly pasture these areas for butterfly advantage.

The other one is doing well, as long as we have narrow dird roads in the forests. They live on sides of the roads and small openings besides the roads.

Jarmo, these are nice detailed macro photos. The Clouded Apollo is a beautiful butterfly that we don't get in the UK. Your second looks like a Marsh Fritillary (Euphydryas aurinia). Libellula depressa is a chaser dragonfly.

Thank you Ian

Sorry about the confusion I was going to send a picture of the dragonfly too, but decided not. And I messed with my copy paste delete work
I stay corrected, partly, I think the correct ID for the colored butterfly is Euphydryas maturna. I wish you were right though, if it was Euphydryas aurinia it would mean more hope for them. It is declining and I was not quite there where one can expect to find them.

Thank you for being observant.

Jarmo
