p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · List of lenses capable of 20fps on the A9

Here is the official list of the current 12 lenses capable of continuously shooting 20 images per second at maximum with AF tracking in AF-C mode.

Many lenses like the 35mm f/1.4 ZA and 55/1.8 ZA did not made the cut even though they are fast focusing lenses. According to Sony, they can only handle 15fps. (see full list below)

I guess it has to do with motor type?

I don't think it's the motor type, since the 50/1.8 FE and 50/2.8 FE macro are in the 20 fps group, and those two lenses are slow focusing.

I think it could be an enhancement of the electronic communication protocol.

Here is the full Sony microsite that shows all the details about E and A mount and what restrictions on C-AF and FPS occur...

It's nice that attaching converters do not affect fps in C-AF. (70-200GM and 100-400GM)

"Attaching a converter (SEL14TC/SEL20TC) has no effect on continuous shooting speed or availability of autofocus tracking."

My guess is it has to do with aperture implementation and/or the micro-chip built into the lens itself. Just curious how does this list compare to the list of lenses that *always* focus stopped down? Is there a direct correlation?

Yes and after watching the tracking video of 100-400GM with 2x I'm excited to try that out....I guess I have to wait till July/Aug though

I pre-ordered the 100-400GM and converters as well.

What about electronically inert lenses? Alt shooters want to know.

THIS LIST IS NOT CORRECT... Ok well maybe it's correct, but some of the lenses don't do a good job (85GM I'm talking to you).

The 85GM doesn't keep up with a walking subject, especially nearer to minimum focusing distance.

The 24-70GM does keep up but gets confused once in a while and will just jump right out of focus and come back in. Or totally just give up and stop doing anything.

The 85FE has the same problem as the 24-70GM but slightly worse.

They all work better at 10fps. Aside from the 85GM which still gets tripped up. The 55 is fine too at 10fps.

I'm not saying this isn't a sports camera, but I am saying that my testing is consistent with some of the sample shots I seen from the big Sony press event. I am getting similar results, and I know it isn't user error as the tests are to simple, and I've done it to many times now for it to be.

EDIT: BTW my D750 had a similar issue with most Nikon G prime 1.4 lenses, so I don't feel to cheated.

Exactly! That is the reason I am guessing. Every time open aperture for focusing and stop down shooting adding delay. That is reason for GM len doing stop down focusing.

Lenses behave differently from body to body.

Yes...........

Yes, this is most definitely the case. BUT If that were the only reason, why wouldn't Sony just have the lens stop down only when you put the camera into 10~20 FPS mode. If you had the camera in one-shot, the lens should stay open and stop down only when taking the shot.

Maybe someone should write in and suggest that ^ to Sony.

Also, I don't even care about this.. hahah, I don't think I ever shot this lens stopped down, like ever. If I'm going to shoot stopped down, I'll grab a zoom But I can see how it would be frustrating if I did ever want to stop down the 85GM.

The 85GM does struggle at closer distances because the DOF is so shallow...Perhaps the list represents lenses that can keep up with 20 frames per second but that does not mean they would have similar number of keepers.

Yes, I thought about that, but the 24-70 does it too. I've noticed a few strange quirks, but I don't want to get into it in great detail until I've tested these theories of mine. That and I don't know how much it would bother in real world scenarios so maybe better to stick with the things that really bother me like the meter on the cam.

Either way, just nitpicking at this point, it's a fantastic camera..

Weather was complete crap (has been the last few weeks), so went to Costco and bought A LOT of pumpkin seeds (seriously enough to survive a zombie outbreak) and went home to work on some house projects.

I have plans to go out tomorrow to a cool outdoor lunch spot, so I'll run some tests with aggressive seagulls Let's hope the weather is better.

Disregarding this list of lens capable of 20fps, has anyone confirmed if their lens, in the 15fps category, has actually exceeded 15fps and can shoot 20fps under AF-C?
The 35/1.4 ZA and the 55/1.8 ZA are the ones that hurts me the most. I fully expected them to be able to shoot 20fps. I guess not?

The FE 50/1.8 is a HUGE shocker to me. I tested this lens in-store on an A7RII, and the autofocus hunted for days, sometimes not even achieving focus at all.
Will I expect this same behavior on the Sony A9? I don't see how it can track and give a high number of keepers with AF-C.
