I might be oversensibel but is your 16-35mmGM also making a quite annoying sound when locking the focus? My 24-70mmGM and 85mmGM are not nearly doing such a sound...

No discernible difference between the sound of my 16-35 and 24-70

No big difference between my 16-35 GM and 85 GM. If anything the 85 is noisier as it moves the elements around. The focus on the 16-35 GM has been very fast an accurate so far.

What the heck, I just placed an order for the 16-35 GM (through Fred's link, of course) for my upcoming Iceland trip. Ready to eat Raman noodles for 2 months

Have comparison crops of the 16-35/2.8 vs 12-24/4 over the 16-24 range been put up anywhere on the web yet?

I spent a couple of hours today taking infinity shots with the 16-35 GM, 12-24 G, Batis 25, FE 35 ZA and Loxia 21. I'll post some results hopefully tomorrow as I find some time. My initial impression after going through 16mm, 18mm, 21mm extreme corner comparisons is that the 16-35 GM is another prime killer with the extreme corners as good as the 12-24 G or maybe in a few instances slightly better. But that 12-24 G is still amazing holding it's own and yet it's not a "GM" lens.

I've only reviewed the extreme corners so far but they have been impressive. I'm not saying that the zooms are really prime killers in all aspects but in the corner to corner sharpness area they are holding their own versus the primes which not too long ago would have been hard to imagine. The sun stars and flare performance will likely still be where the primes still hold their own against the zooms..

Good to see that the 16-35 seems to be performing well, hoping to eventually save enough to buy one!

Very slight crop just to balance it up but I think this lens is a real landscape photographers dream when it come to the Sony Native lenses. I will now happily combine it with the FE-70-300 for this sort of work. 2 bodies with these lenses I feel I can cover most anything and can even throw the FE55 in the backpack for not much more weight. I know the 12-24 is superb but if only carrying 2 lenses I would find the range a bit limited

Ordered the 16-35 GM from Adorama and received it today. No chance to try it out yet. It's a bit shorter than the 24-70 GM, very well built, focus ring very smooth. One thing I am not entirely happy about, as you can see in the picture, Adorama's shipping packaging leaves a lot to be desired. They just put a sheet of bubble wrap on the button of the box, that's it, nothing around the lens box itself. This is a $2200 lens! When I sell used lenses here, I pack it like it would be dropped from the 5th floor. Maybe Helen from Adorama would chime in. Sorry for the rant.

I don't understand why Sony didn't add the lock function like the Sony 24-70mm gm lens, c-mon Sony

Doesn't need it as mine hasn't moved a mm when being carried on shoulder strap hanging by my side

Maybe today, but this is the kind of thing that tends to wear out as the lens ages.

I am really interested to find out if the 16-35 GM can replace my Batis 18 and 25, so eager to see your thoughts. I love my Batis lenses, but I can carry more focal lengths in my little lens bag if I can reduce two or three primes down to one superb zoom. Image quality has got to be there though.

I am totally with you on this. Packaging from Amazon is usually dismal and negligent as well, though they just shipped an expensive lens to me that was pretty well packed.

B&H usually does a very professional job of protecting what they are shipping.

I'm headed out of town for a few days vacation and a family get together. So I won't have any time for putting together crops of my test shots. I spent another couple of hours shooting a different scene with infinity shots at various apertures for the 16-35 GM and 12-24 G. I went through them all and my overall impression is that both of these zooms are very impressive in terms of sharpness levels from center to the edges and even in the extreme corners. There is no smearing at all at any aperture with either lens. However, they are so close in IQ at the 16mm to 24mm range that I'm thinking that I may be better off with just the 12-24 G. I don't really need f/2.8 in the 16-24 range other then for the occasional astro work and I still have my Loxia 21 f/2.8 and an old Rokinon 14 f/2.8 lens. I would really like to see if one of these new fast 14mm or 15mm prime lenses coming out soon would even be a better astro option then the zoom. Lots to think about but a good problem to have. It wasn't that long ago we had no good native wide lens options to consider.

Thanks for giving your observations, Chuck. It sounds like the choice between the two lenses mainly comes down to price, size, weight, aperture and zoom range rather than image quality. I can't help but think that what I probably really want is a new version of the 16-35/4 that matches this new pair for image quality and has low sample variation But I'm definitely going to be thinking about whether I can re-work my lens collection a bit to fit the 16-35/2.8 or 12-24/4 in, in place of one or more existing lenses.

New comparison from LensRentals. They're a fan of the 16-35mm f/2.8 GM.

It's surprising to see such subjective review at LensRentals.
I consider their MTF tests the most trustworthy and objective resource. I hope Roger will be able to post the charts for the FE 16-35/2.8 GM soon.

Yes. I did not find a lot of value in that posting. Comparing the 12-24 and 16-35 without a landscape image nor any 100% crops seemed odd. Subjective comments about build quality and image quality are fine, but obviously we are used to much more insightful and objectively based information from LR.
