So I guess this just destroyed the resale value of my Batis 18 and Batis 25!

I never had much interest in the 16-35/4, but the 2.8 seems very promising. Smaller and lighter than I would have expected it to be.

Yup just send me your Batis 25mm

Is the 12-24 definitely full frame or is it for crop sensors?

The 12-24 looks very interesting. It's size seems smaller than the Sigma. Might make a great lens for travel. Need to wait for images to justify the price.

It doesn't take filters, though - so it's of little use to me for landscape photography with no way to attach a polarizer.

I had the Sigma 12-24 II on my 5Dmk3 and loved it...Sold my 16-35 and never looked back...Nice this is an FE G lens priced very competitively...July will be fun with the 100-400 and the 12-24.

I had the Sigma 12-24 as well, but the original version (I bought it in about 2005). It had very low distortion and was quite sharp once stopped down to f11 or so. It worked great for architecture, but you needed serious power to use it in a large space stopped down so much.

Normally, I only pulled it out for very specific situations, and then I'd also pull out about 20,000 ws of strobes to be able to use it in a large space. I had a couple of very large Norman strobe heads that could output a full 4800 ws in the head, and a bunch of the smaller normal heads. Ganged all up, I could balance daylight even with f11-f16 or so.

I had to be careful to not put those units on a single circuit in the building though...

Anyway, because of that lens, I'm especially looking forward to seeing this Sony 12-24!

I used to think that way also but lately, I have put more and more "digital" filters into works. Frankly, I don't remember the last time I used a physical filter on my lens. Of course, I fully realize that your or everybody's need will vary widely. I am speaking only about mine in this case.

Thank god it's not another 50. I will buy the 16-35mm GM f/2.8 and give it a whirl. I also like the 12-24mm but would use it mostly for astro and f/4 would be too slow. Nice looking lens though!

I am in the same boat but realized last month in Oregon that a CPL was essential for shooting foliage, streams, waterfalls, etc. It makes such a huge difference that cannot be duplicated in PP (at least with my ability).

Ok, 12-24 no filters... no interested.

16-35 then, I will wait for a rolling review here and then, by 2018 when it gets a bit down in price like the 24-70 now in europe I will buy one.

Also not sure how good the sunstars on the 16-35mm GM will be with 11 circular blades v.s. 7 on the 16-35mm f/4.

No such thing as a digital polarizer, unfortunately.

Aside from that, it looks like an interesting lens... but at CA$2300, I'll probably pass.

Here are two sun stars from DPReview's sample gallery:

Definitely no Voigtlander or Loxia.

Both look very promising. I suspect that 12-24 may actually be more popular with the video and/or gimbal crowd. Would love one but since I don't usually shoot that wide I'm most excited because it will mean affordable 16-35 f/4's in the next few months!

EDIT: "more" should be "very" a lot of photographers will love it but the internal focusing and light weight are ideal for gimbals. Pretty unique for a FF zoom.

Is there a physical restraint in WA lenses to putting in line filters like in Super teles?

We should do a poll on which one folks may buy. The 16-35 makes more sense for me as i have a nice small CV12 that is very good. I would probably sell my Sigma 24-35 but not sure about my Batis 18mm

When doing PR crap i could even jump into crop mode with the 16-35 and i need 2.8

There are ways to simulate that.... But I understand your point.
