Ran into this guy while looking for him. This is the biggest living Cottonmouth I have encountered to date. I found it about 5 miles north of Alligator Alley.
Temperature was just right to spot one sunning itself. So I was wading around the tree islands looking for one. And there he was. They get a bad rap. They are not aggressive, but terribly defensive.
It went left to get around me to the water. I very slowly went right to block its retreat. It stopped and went right to get around me to the water. And then I very slowly went left to again stop its retreat. If I had hurried it would have gone into a defensive mode, just like the second image I will post here. Finally it stopped and just stared at me. I was ready with a monopod, SLR (F3) and a 300 f4 manual focus Nikkor, and Kodachrome. Exposure was 1/60 at f16.
