I love my nFD 300mm f/2.8. And I like it as a small supertele lens for travelling. The nFD 400mm f/2.8 with its ~double weight is quite heavy and big, and I love to use it on a tripod. The 300mm is for me still goot to use without tripod, and I gets a lot of good images.

That 400mm is the heaviest lens I have ever tried. I almost bought one a few years ago but it was sadly a very bad copy. My 300mm before that was really nice though.

I don't have experience with this particular lens but collected quite a few nFD lenses during the period when Sony did not have a wide range of good quality glass available.

Canon made some pretty sweet lenses in that era, many of which easily match modern much more expensive glass.

The FDn 300mm f/2.8 is the second lightest 300mm f/2.8 ever made, second only to the Tamron SP 300mm f2.8 LD IF 60B.

If you want to go longer and stay relatively "light" with vintage glass, the best options are the Tamron SP 400mm f/4 at 2270g and the Canon FDn 500mm f/4.5L at 2610g.

I have seen there is a Canon FD 300mm f/5.6 S.S.C.

If it is good i do not know. But in spite of being 198mm (7.8 in) it weights only 635g (1.4 lbs). Very atractive weight!

I recently bought a FL-F 300mm f/5.6, a worlds first in 1969 that incorporated 2 fluorite elements. Is it any good? It’s superb with no CA and pin sharp wide open. OK, it’s only f/5.6, but it’s small, light and handles beautifully. The photographic world stood up and took notice of Canon after the release of this one lens.

Beautiful, and in great condition.

Not sure how the 300/5.6 performs. There was also a Canon FD 100-300/5.6L at around 700g. That one might be comparable to the EF version released early in the EOS system timeline. Back to tele primes, there was an FD 400/4.5 (non-L) at 1270g.

I had a couple of the Tamron 300/2.8 versions back in the 80s to early 90s - both the 107B and 60B. The Canon FD at the time was too expensive for me, but I'd get the FD now over the Tamron. Really a beauty of a lens without the bulk of AF models.

I wonder how IQ compares with the Nikon 300/4 PF.

Thanks for posting this. I always thought that the fluorite elements were only used in the f2.8 supertele lenses. Nice find, looks like an interesting landscape lens….

There is an error on the Mir page regarding how many fluorite elements this lens has. That page says one, but there is in fact two. Here...
