The manufacturer and possibly the service center adjusts tiny shims on at least a7ii and later bodies to align the sensor to the mount at very small increments, beyond what normal shops or even Roger can do. So that would suggest to me that it is optimal to have the mount in precise alignment.

And I don't feel like the small diameter of E mount and small depth of the a7 series chassis provides comparatively strong resistance to warp. Hence my paranoia.

I've never used a 2kg lens, especially not on an a7 series body.

Any tips on how not to accidentally warp the mount or chassis when handling such a lens? Seems like that could be an issue because even an adapted Tamron 70-200 f2.8 seems a bit stressful on the mount.

Never hold the camera lens combination by the camera. I don't even do this with a 700g lens. It's just more stable to let your left hand (if you are right handed) sit under the lens (camera if you are using a tiny lens) and take the weight, letting your right hand use the controls without taking much of the weight.

This is how most people held most SLRs back in the day. With giant DSLRs with bit grips people started hanging on to the camera with the lens poking out the front.

That's a bad idea with any lens camera combo that is heavy. Once you get used to holding your camera setup by the lens, holding it by the body, even for a second, will seem freaky.

Can of worms... shimming the entire mount only controls infinity adjustment. I'm sure they have a method during assy to adjust the parallelism between the two.

I always equate warp as something that occurs 'naturally' due to environmental conditions. I think you're referring to good old fashioned bending!

Just picked this lens up. First shot hand held at 1/500 -probably the slowest I'd dare go (maybe some slight camera shake present). Not an easy lens to shoot with but I'm excited to see the shots I'll come up with. Body is A7Rii

Been practicing with the newly received 300 F2.8.

Lens is VERY heavy and difficult to hold steady, even with the excellent A7RII IBIS.

Tweaked my back shooting with it for about 40 minutes yesterday.
Need practice hand-holding it and nailing focus.

I was able to get a decent shot HH at ~ 1/60th of a second, if I braced my back against something. See sample of the blower below.

A few more test pics below that. TONS of potential with this lens. Almost hard to believe it's over 30 yrs old.

It's just fantastic. I use mine quite often, and don't find it a hassle whatsoever to carry. I can comfortably use it for hours personally.
The IQ is stellar and from what I've heard it is indeed much sharper than the F4 version. Just make sure you get lucky with a good copy. I picked mine up from a small store for 600EUR.

What one can say or add?
It is a great Canon glass. I had it before and I'll buy it again if the price is right.

I bought mine a few months ago for £550 in truly mint condition. It is by far (and I have a few!) the sharpest vintage lens I have.

do you use it often in spite of the weight? the iq is very atractive, but the size and weight...

I use mine quite a bit. But only at home or around town - I don’t take it travelling. Luckily a fair bit of what I like to photograph is nearby. But I use other lenses for travel..

what is your preferred long telefoto for travelling?

I do use it quite a bit, particularly for wildlife, but not fast moving! Weight isn’t an issue.

For a long time I've meant to get one of these; they tend to be less trashed than used EF 2.8/300 lenses because the were made just before the move from FD to EF. And I don't mind MF for this kind of work (though on a monopod you could use TAP if the lens is mounted to the pod).

A great lens for our dogs, and a certain kind of people pic too. If Sony ever make an FE one I predict 6k

I actually almost pulled the trigger on one of these a bunch of different times a few years back but finally got a pretty clean copy of the EF version for 1100 about two years ago which I couldn't pass up since the FDs weren't far enough off that to convince me to go MF instead.

Images out of the FD in this thread look plenty good.

Not sure if anyone has done a comparison between the FD and EF version around here but it would be very interesting to hear some people's thoughts on IQ differences (hopefully I didn't miss it elsewhere in the thread if already done).

With regard to another question posed above, I prefer packing the Canon 55-250 STM for travel since it is super compact, weights next to nothing, and has solid performance albeit only covering APSC. I tend to throw it on the Fuji X-T30 with adapter and it ends up being a super light/compact way for me to get to 375mm.

I only use mine once a few times in the year so I don't have many super recent samples. Here's a few from a while back.

I don’t travel with a long tele; longest is 200. For me longer lenses are either almost special effect lenses - certain kinds of portrait, and the botanical work I do locally. But no interest in that kind of thing travelling. Of course the other disciplines are wildlife and sport. I will never do sport, and I’m not going to have the time to take bird or wildlife stuff seriously until I retire! Come that day I might get a big white, but that’s a fair way if...

I love my nFD 300mm f/2.8. And I like it as a small supertele lens for travelling. The nFD 400mm f/2.8 with its ~double weight is quite heavy and big, and I love to use it on a tripod. The 300mm is for me still good to use without tripod, and I gets a lot of good images.

The size and weight really isn't too bad, you just have to get used to it. I find that holding it by the neck is very comfortable for me when I'm not shooting for example.
Here's a picture of it in action from me:
