Not at all. It came out of a conversation about the FD 300mm f/4 and a remark that since 300mm lenses are "speciality" [uncommon] lenses you might as well go for the f/2.8 version.

That's something I don't agree with at all - the FD 300mm f/2.8 is on the very limit of what I can hand hold, and even then I would get tired extremely quickly. The f/4 version is about half the weight and I would be able to shoot for extended periods no problem, so the two are not very much alike from my point of view.

somehow all this got derailed into a pointless dispute about (a) how many photographers use 300mm lenses and (b) how uncommon that has to be to count as 'speciality' instead of what sort of lens meets what sort of need. I can see that Mat needs a 4/300 or perhaps a good zoom if that's not too slow and large. If I shot long tele landscape more than I do I'd want one too (actually I would have got the 70-300 if it hadnt seemed to be a variance nightmare and have almost got the c/y 100-300 a few times) but in fact what I really want a 300 for is stuff a 2.8 does better and which is in and around home...

Seriously, don't take my work for it, 300mm+ shooters are such a small percentage of photographers that Sony have still disregarded that segment of focal lengths for E mount, there isn't even a hint of anything over 135mm in the pipeline.

I could be wrong, but this is the data I use to form the basis of my opinion.

OTOH among my peers over 45+ years a 300mm lens is a bread-and-butter lens. This isn't to say you are wrong, it's a limitation of projecting one's own personal perspective on others.

Just a thought....if you want AF how about picking up a used Tokina 300 2.8 for A-mount? I got one for under $500 off eBay to use on occasion on my A99ii, and with the LA-EA4 it works decent on my A7R2 as well.

I was about to post that this sounded like a good idea, but I bet they're hard to find in A-mount. Then I quickly checked eBay and saw there was one for sale, nearby, in excellent condition, for £200... I wonder how quickly I can get hold of an LA-EA4 to test it...

Do you have any idea how good it is optically compared to the Canon FD 300/2.8?

I'm not sure...I have never had the Canon FD 300 2.8. Back when I was a Canon user I had an EF 300 2.8 non-IS, however never had a chance to compare them back-to-back.

Here are some reviews of the cheapest one like I have.....the newer one seems to get better reviews but for the limited use it gets on my A99ii, I figured I was fine.

My dim recollection of reviews from the days of film was that the Tokina was thought to be pretty sharp but had a LOT of LoCA...

Nice review, Phillip!

I'd love to see more high contrast city shots when you get a chance -- best opportunity to see the fine detail on the f/stop range across frame.

Only if the air is very clear which doesn't happen too often. Plus I would use my 4/300 L for that purpose since it is as sharp with much easier handling.

Nice review.

I think probably the main contender that many look at when looking for a MF 300 2.8 would be the old Tamron adaptall 300 2.8 (model 60B though there are others).

It is cheaper usually though can have some purple fringing though not something I see very often.

Mine has followed me from mount to mount for many years and I have had sports shots published in a National Greyhound racing paper here in Australia from it as well as other sports shots in other newspapers.

You can even get an FD adaptall these days to turn it into an FD lens. I have several adaptall's but mine has a Pentax one on it as I dropped the lens a few years ago and well it isn't what it used to be.

I hope to take the lens to an outdoor gig with my A7s this weekend.

I don't need 300mm 2.8 often but I love this battered old lens warts and all.

The Tamron is probably the lightest 300 2.8 going too and I just throw it into a backpack and walk around for hours with it if needed.

If I didn't have this old warrior, I would consider the NFD 300 2.8 mind you if I found it cheap enough and still in good condition.

Took my old Tamron to a local festival. I swear I love this old lens more and more and don't use it anywhere near enough these days. I think the FD L Canon would have been better but I am very happy still.

While I have only one Canon FD 300mm f/2.8L I have other 300mm focal length lenses, and several other longer focal length lenses - but most may not be of interest for photographers (like those episcope triplet lenses).

Here with the FD 300/2.8L

I love my FD 300/2.8L lens, and even more the 400mm f/2.8L - knowing its lesser good CA correction.
My lenses don´t suffer at the moment from detoriated rollers for the internal focussing. Some of those lenses do.

Thought I'd contribute to this thread. First, I'll admit that I don't really have any PP skills to make my pictures 'pop' like most of the people here but since I'm from the days of film I tend to keep most of my effort on the camera side.

All these pics are offhand with the Sony A7RII/FD 300/2.8 and the one of the moon is with the FD 1.4X extender. The deer shots are wide open. This lens is SHARP.
