p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · A few barns left but no owls

Despite its widespread distribution, the Barn owl is considered an endangered species both Canada-wide and provincially in Ontario. In the past 10-15 years I have not heard of one sighting report, let alone seen a wild Barn owl in Ontario. Thankfully, the Canadian Raptor Conservancy own a few specimens, and at least one of them has been falconry trained. Therefore I was able to observe and photograph the owl on a few occasions.

These shots have been taken with a variety of Canon equipment, on different days. I am not even sure we are looking at one and the same owl individual.

Firstly, here are a few static shots.

Fantastic portraits, Peter; enjoyed 'em all! I'm not well-versed in this species but it seems this one is darker than many I think I've seen before. The markings on this one are gorgeous; nice work on your part!

Thanks for posting.

The Barn Owl is my favorite owl Peter, and you did a great job with this one. 1, 4, and 8 stand out ~ Ron

Thank you Kim and Ron, glad to hear you like the pictures. I am not really knowledgeable about that bird, but I've read that there are major regional variations in plumage colours and even facial features etc. That is perhaps inevitable when looking at a species which has such a wide world distribution, and many subspecies are being listed.

Nice portraits indeed.
Do they take the leg straps off for you when you go there?

Good question, Don, they do not take them off. I remove them myself when I get back home. Mind you, I obviously do not aim to misrepresent those falconry (captive) birds as wild birds, it's just a matter of aesthetics. Those "jesses" (anklets) look absolutely dreadful (visually ruinous) to my eye. In normal steady flight the jesses are either not noticeable, or even better, they are concealed by downward swept wings.

Fantastic work Peter. I have not seen any in the wild or heard any sightings either.

Nice work on these, Peter. I wondered about the jessless flight, too- thanks for the info. Haven't seen one in the wild for at least 5 years.

Peter, all of your images have such a marvelous feel and style to them . I know that is not a very technical term , "feel" but it is the word that comes to mind

Masterful technique and artistry combined to produce beautiful images.

Great shots. They are one of the most beautiful marked birds. I have some shots of one in a field during a snow storm. The eyes are dull due to no catch light. The shots are from the early 90's and I haven't seen one since. Thanks for sharing these.

Nice shots...many farmers in Oregon build houses to encourage the owls (they really are rodent controlling machines).
