I went to Antelope Canyon to shoot the magic light beam, but I didn't like the shot and ended up with this alternative image. Thanks for viewing.

Sony A7RII + FE 24-70/4. I hope you like it too.

Sorry, looks too contrived.

Thanks EGrave for your feedback. Interestingly, I had never seen a similar shot before coming to this place since I was so focused in capturing the light beam! It could be my mistake, but surely I could not constrive for such a shot. The tour guy took our group through the canyon and just passed this location. At that time, I was so interested in the light coming from the top and ask for permission to capture it. The tour guy helped to shovel several piles of sand up to the rocks, and I literally had about 15sec to compose and shoot it before moving on with the group.

Well, I'm just the opposite, as I really like it. Much different than the usual AC images posted, and well composed and exposed. Nice job!

Yep, I like this too. While I have seen this before, not sure I have seen it with 3 rivers of sand.

Nice work,

Jim

This is very fine, the tumbleweed is the cat's meow.

So, it was a set-up shot. You said "The tour guy helped to shovel several piles of sand up to the rocks."

I like it. Nicely done
If you go on a guided tour, which is pretty much all you can do, you get this set up for you.
While I'm sure of some more serendipitous moments when the sand fall "happens", this is what most get.

So the guide helped set it up, what's the big deal? In 99% of the good light beam shots, there will be a guide tossing up sand to let the light beam hit it.

Perhaps you don't mean it, but your using the word "contrived" is coming across as an insult, and inferring this is not a good shot because there was some setup involved.

For me, it doesn't take away from the beauty of this. And as the OP said, he hadn't seen it before. We need to be careful to realize that lot's of people haven't seen the myriad of previous shots that we might have seen.

Anyway, I Iike it.

Dare we say every photo taken in a studio is contrived and worthless?

Geez! I will not give my opinion any more unless it is too say "nice shot" or "good one." IMHO, contrived shots ARE less "valuable". An image of a wolf taken in the wild is much different than one taken in the zoo! There is a good chance the wild shot won't be technically as good because of the circumstances. But I would still value the natural shot more. And the awful trend to over process landscapes to the point that they look nuclear - again, not natural. There IS a difference between photography and photo art. The stale and trite argument that " it's your image, you can do want you want" or "that's my interpretation" is fine. Just call it what it is. Anyway, I will not argue with anyone. Been there, done that. sorry, if I hurt anyone's feelings.
