Just an fyi...one of our furnaces went out but not completely....what we found out was it was spewing carbon monoxide into the house...fortunately not at a level that could be lethal but over time it could have become a real issue. Make sure you have CO detectors and that they are up to date...ours were not. I did smell an odor which was not a typical gas odor...as you may know CO is odorless but mixing with the gas a bit gave a bit of an eggy smell...not the rotten egg smell we are accustomed to but just a bit off.
Anyway I do wonder if the CO levels might have been making me a little sluggish...like these guys.

I've also found boiler problems via smell rather than the CO2 detector. One must keep and eye and I guess nose on it. I'm glad you caught this and everything turned out OK. The turtle looks so tired. Is it's name Yertle?

I'm sorry you had to slug it out with your heating system Eric. We have electric heat pumps, so no CO problem here. ~ Ron

We have a CO detector. A furnace guy sneered and said they were not necessary because we would notice the smell. We still have it, though.

Thanks guys....I wouldn't rely on smell to discover CO before it's too late...it is typically odorless and certainly if it builds up over night your sense of smell is going to be useless. We put in 3 new CO detectors last evening...one scare is one too many.

They are now mandatory in Ontario. (CO detectors). An entire family of 4 died a few years back not far from me. That is what prompted the new law. It is totally odourless.
It can present like fatigue or the flu at the hospital, so we have to be aware of that possibility when we see patients.
Take away point; if your furnace goes, resist bringing your BBQ into the house to heat it!

Yup, the odorless killer is not something we can afford to downplay. The look of the turtle in the second image is just great to display that although it was not the cause of its exhaustion

Agreed we need CO detectors. But for the record, it is odorless when pure, and it is never pure when coming from a furnace. So you will smell something. But evidently some folks ignore the smell and then CO can be deadly.

Very good advise on the detectors. We had a new furnace installed last year and updated our CO detectors. Super shots.
