These extreamly fast ducks are plentiful on the east pond of Jamaica Bay National Wildlife Refuge. When they fly close to you there wings make a mechanical sound similar to a helicopter. I took these photos a few minutes after sunset in the pritty blue light wiht the assistance of fill flash. Soon the merganser will head north to avoid the comfortable temperatures that we will soon have here in New York City.
I've never seen them with such a "black eye" before. My favourite is #2 where I think you have managed the right amount of subject sharpness combined with the blurred panning motion to create an effective shot.
Beautiful work and beautiful birds. I'd love to spend time just birding your territory with you - I'm a huge fan of your work and totally envious of the birds you get to see.

Thank you Ken,
New York City is on the Eastern Flyway and we get to see incredible variety of birds. Roger Tory Peterson did most of the paintings for his first guide right here in New York City. If you visit I'd be happy to show you around

Nice Morris. Almost every time i saw these at lake they are way far from my lens reach. Your images are really good.
Thank you Maney,
These were quite a ways out and I'm cropping from 600mm

Beautiful shots and amazing panning skills Morris, # 2 is the best of the group.
Marcelo
Thank you Marcelo,
These are at 1/160 which is not that slow, it's the speed of the birds that makes the pan so effective

Nice shots! The in-flight shots really capture the feeling of speed.
Dave
Thank you Dave,
I love to add blur to my images to have them show the speed
