p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Big Dog Week....Solo the wild dog
When a wild dog befriends 2 sets of jackals with pupls and helps hunt and protect them it is the story of legends. This is the wild dog found in Botswana that did just that for a number of years. A documentary film was made and shown on Nat Geo Wild and we were lucky enough to see her in her element.

Oh now THIS is cool. I watched that Nat Geo special they made about her.
Not only did you get fantastic shots of these beautiful critters, you nailed shots of the star herself!
p.1 #7 · p.1 #7 · Big Dog Week....Solo the wild dog
Wonderful !
Did you know she was the second wild dog named "Solo?" Way back when in the days when there were only 3 networks on TV and they showed nature shows as opposed to advertising, the very first documentary study of the dogs in the wild was made into a TV special and then a book.
If you think this Solo's story is heart-rending, the first one will break your heart.
Terrific shots of what is probably the most famous wild dog ever. After seeing this post I watched the NatGeo Wild episode on YouTube. The video quality was poor but good enough to see the amazing story of Solo.
The last frame with the laid back ears is unusual, almost cat-like. What a special, even historic, shot!
Outdone again by the cat master, AKA the "wild" dog whisperer. You always end up in the middle of these fabled stories from Africa. Who's your agent?
You are the "Clark Kent" of African photographers.

That last shot is gorgeous on many levels.
Dave
Thanks Dave...I was really hoping we'd have a chance to see her and was lucky to actually see her on a hunt, unsuccessful but trying to keep up with her was such fun.

Obviously, they are my favorites.
Thanks Genes...we were actually the first to realize she hunted and befriended 2 different jackal families as we saw her two different times with a different jackal in a different location....incredibly interesting.

The first and last are my picks Eric. I have a slight preference for the first as it flows best
Morris
Thanks Morris...there is really no way to get in front of these guys when they are hunting but I'd like to get those shots of it coming towards me at full run

Thanks Dave, the documentary does leave a few things out or was done prior to some info being known. Sadly, she has not been seen for a few years now and it is not known whether she eventually joined another dog pack or met her demise...I love to believe the first but the second is much more likely.

Very nice collection, Eric. I rarely see them alone like this, am I correct?
This dog is brave.
-Tam
Yes Tam, they are very social animals and unless disease destroys a pack they are virtually always with others and packs up to 20-30 are frequently reported.

Haha...I'm just the celebrity animal paparazzi...It is actually quite nice to have a connection with what one is shooting...it adds another dimension to what is already a very cool photo experience.
