Don Gut invited big dog photos to follow up Big Cat week. I completely missed the big cat week, but I will post a few photos for the dog week. These shots are from Botswana a little over a year ago. We had several encounters with African Wild Dog packs. These photos are from two of those encounters.
1. Young dog playing with another pup
2. Mom is concerned that we may be too close to the pups
3. The rest of the shots are from an encounter with a pack of >20 dogs and were all taken within an hour of sunset. Several of the dogs approached and sometimes adopted threatening postures but seemed to be mainly curious about us.
#1 looks like a "dog smile". Nicely done. And your low angle stuff is a great perspective. #3 is super with the low angle, the light, and the approach. It also shows how thin they are. They have to be able to cover large distances at a steady pace.
Lovely stuff.

Fantastic set Dave, you really did capture some incredible shots in this group.
Louie,
Thanks for you generous feedback. We had some good luck with wild dog encounters on that trip. It was the first time I had seen them.

Don,
Thanks for your comment about these images. They are among my favorites so I am pleased you like them. During the trip we had a couple of opportunities to get low angle shots, which I like. The wild dog's lean, slender bodies, long legs and powerful jaws make them formidable hunters. I took video of them hunting and they are very successful and can take an impala apart in just a few minutes.
OMG. Outstanding images. I am too curious, how you managed to shot at this angle. Please share or PM Dave. That's the angle i always look for to click but ......Not possible always.
Best regards and TFS

Very cool collection of wild dog images, Dave. It must have been thrilling! Love the sunset shots, nice low angles and light. Those ears are amazing...definitely not going to sneak about on those critters.

Thanks to all of you for looking at the images and your generous comments. I am pleased that such accomplished wildlife photographers like them.
We had several encounters with wild dogs and tried to get low angle shots by getting to low ground with the subject higher, but it was usually not possible. In #3-8, we got in good position with the setting sun to our back, I was on the ground prone, the Landrover pulled forward a few feet, the dogs were walking toward me over a gentle slope, I quickly took about a hundred shots of a few dogs, the Landrover backed up and I got back in. Some shots were well positioned with no obstructions, and in a few the dog was making eye contact. Those are the shots you see. They are among my favorites.

Some of these dogs look down right malevolent Dave. But this is a very nice set ~ Ron

It doesn't get any more wonderful than this ! Great Work of some super experience. Thanks for posting. More would be great.
Ron, Dave, Marcus, Jim,
Thanks for the kind comments. Some of the postures do look menacing but I did not feel threatened. They were a bit curious but moments later seemed oblivious to my presence. Regardless, some of the shots benefit from the menacing look. Thanks again for your comments.
