p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Adapters fit on A7R but not A7RII

I have two adapters that work fine with the A7R but wont mount at all on the A7RII. All my native lenses plus the Metabones IV mount no problem so I don't think anything is wrong with the camera, I think Sony changed something to make the mount sturdier.

Does anyone know what is different about the A7RII mount and whether it is possible to modify an adapter to make it fit?

One is an FD->E adapter that can be replaced easily enough but the other is a Kippon OM->E tilt-shift adapter which was more expensive and there's no indication if an A7RII version exists:

It's likely going to be the width inside the groove of the lens mount ring. This would be tough to fix. You might try and sand it with fine-grit sandpaper, put that would take forever, possibly not work, and destroy the resale value of the adapter. Better off selling to someone with an A7R.

I think it has to do with differences in tolerance between the two cameras. My FD adapter from rainbow didn't work either. They have a different one for the version II of the A7 cameras.

I have an A7s and had an original A7.

I have lots of adapters smart and dumb and all fit both cameras except one Commlite smart adapter fit my A7 but does not mount to my A7s.

I put it down to the adapters tolerances.

I noticed the same thing with some of my adapters. I don't know if it's just their typical sloppy manufacturing tolerances, or if they slightly changed the specifications of the new mount.

They changed the mount a bit from the a7/r to the a7s. When I went from my a7 to an a7II, I had to get all new adapters. Only needed 3....

unfortunately, poorly made adapter. I have plenty of third party adapters that fit both A7r/tough mount/a7rii. Quite a few fail as well.

It's because the original had plastic inner rings, and the metal design is slightly thicker. This was pretty noticeable on the Tough E mount when it came out. But yeah, some just don't fit

Yes, this was my first experience with a Sony A7RII, ie that not all adapters fit!

My perception was that the bayonet mount on the A7II and A7RII is noticeably "tighter" than that of the A7 and A7R. However I've been able to use Novoflex and Rayqual adapters without problems on all models.

Ditto. All my Novoflex and Rayquals survived the transition from A7r to A7rII. Most but not all of the others.

I think that the others have a lot of variation, and I think the mount on the A7r and the other gen 1 models was intentiaoally averaged around a looser setting so more variation would be tolerated without things not fitting.

When they went to tighter tolerances on the II they were able to make them tighter without fear of anything not fitting.

Unless, of course, that thing was made to loose tolerances like cheap adapters, in which case the samples at one end wouldn't fit. I had two OM adapters of the same brand and age: one was fine on the rII, the other too tight.

This explanation is just speculation, I should emphasise..

I have a very cheap MD to E-mount adapter which worked fine on the older e-mount bodies but had problems when using it with a camera modified to use the tough e-mount which is more similar to the newer A7ii mounts. What I found was that on this mount there was a very small screw placed next to one of the flanges on the e-mount bayonet probably to help lock the lens in place with the older mounts but was apparently slightly wrong for the newer mount. Removed that and it works perfectly on the all metal mount and the older A7 mount as well. Not sure if other cheap adapters have that as well but it may be worth checking.

I'm having trouble adapting a Minolta MD 7.5mm fisheye to my Sony a7r. Using K&F adapter - which adapts other MD lenses to this Sony but not the fisheye.

The fisheye adapts to my FujiX-T2 with a K&F adapter just fine.

What could be the problem with the Fisheye 7.5 and the Sony a7r?

I am open to getting another adapter like Novaflex but I just don't want to waste the time and money if that's not the problem.

The 7.5 does not have a focus ring because it doesn't need one - everything is supposed to be in focus from 1.5' on. But, with the K&F adapter on the a7r, nothing is in focus.

Is this an infinity focus adjustment needed that another adapter would fix? I do want the circle that this lens gives on FF.
