Not! But this was what I thought after seeing this occur several times during birding walks. At first impression a dark, thick bodied snake that could wrap around a GBH's bill fooled me into thinking they were catching the Water Moccasins that are quite common in Arkansas. However, this big crop of a poor photo revealed a mystery animal for me. A little research showed that it is an Amphiuma. Wikipedia says that they are in the salamander family and only found in the SE part of the country. I have a friend who says that he often caught them while fishing the bayous and sloughs. He didn't say how they tasted.
Neat Sharon. It doesn't look like an Amphiuma to me. Amphiuma have pointed tails without fins. It looks closer to an eel to me, but I can't really tell from your photo ~ Ron

This was taken in the swampy backwater of an old beaver dam, Ron, quite a ways from the Arkansas River. Can't picture an eel migrating or spawning here. Vic
