This was the highlight of my trip to Maui and first ever Milky Way capture. Captured at the summit of Haleakala National Park with perfect dark skies. That's science city in the foreground to give a sense of scale of the galactic core.

Well done. An awesome view.

We were there, and I had thoughts of going up at night to take some shots, but did not have enough experience with astrophotography, so decided against it. Next time maybe.

Thank you for your feedback Archibald. It's definitely worth going up for astro shots. Just dress warmly as it gets very cold up there.

It can vary from below zero to low 50s (during the day). It's usually windy up there. There is a small enclosed viewing area at the top to seek some shelfter. Otherwise, dress in many layers and wear gloves.

Nice, been there for sunrise and for sunset but never at night. I prefer sunrise rather than sunset, but sunrise definitely means you get up very early to make the trek if your staying in Kihei. Last time we went up for sunrise was several years ago in May and temps at the top were in the high 20's while temps down in Kihei were in upper 70's.

Awesome shot.
I thought the astronomers kicked everyone off the top at dusk. How were you able to stay up there?

I was near the top of Mona Kea on big Island a couple of years ago taking star shots one July. The temperature had fallen to the upper 20s (F). Being from South Dakota and knowing cold, I had packed some medium weight 800-fill goose down jacket, gloves, and a heavy base layer. The hardest thing was dodging the rangers! Ended up having my wife drive back down to the gift shop, leaving me up in the dark. I'm used to being in the dark.

I walked back down when finished. Going down is easier than walking up!

David, thank you. I drove up at 2 AM from Lahaina and arrived around 4. Sure wish I had another hour up there. I wasn't aware they kicked people off at dusk.

Appreciate it. Thank you! Being a novice astro shooter, it was one exposure. The cars traveling up the road lit up the observatories so I got lucky there. The foreground could use a bit brighter exposure but the main subjects are the Milky Way and Observatories.

Not usually a big fan of MW shots because they don't ever look like it does in person, but here the extra detail works perfectly with the observatory to give this one a story. Nice work!
