(Show's over)
Something odd happened last summer. Twelve Egrets would congregate on a pond early before sunrise, they'd fish for 30-45 minutes, and then they dispersed. Nobody could tell where they came from, or to which parts they went after their breakfast. Several days in a row, twelve egrets flew in like clockwork , one "witch" short of a full coven of 13. They came, they ate, and then they flew off.
Unfortunately, it was difficult doing any photography in such low light. For one, even 1DX with a fast lens such as 400 f/2.8 had a hard time focusing on the poorly lit birds. One morning I pressed my 50 f/1.0 into service, and this is the result, without lifting any shadows or trying to get a "proper" exposure. Instead, I left the image the way I "felt" the scene.
(Only 11 birds shown in the image, I can't tell where the 12th one was at the time.)

Guys I know what is that you are saying about the focus ring, but my eyesight is considerably worse than 1DX low light sensitivity of AF. That is why you do not want to see my pictures taken with 800L + 2xTC, and God knows I've tried very hard.

I've always suspected that the 50 f/1.0 is good for something.... now you have demonstrated that very well, Pareng Pete. Who needs artificial lighting when you have an f/1.0 glass?

He, he, glad you like that shot Pare. Here and there I've been using the 50 f/1.0L lens to photograph my avian pets. See a couple of examples below.

It doesn't look like much is going to get by that crew; they've got the place pretty well surrounded. Interesting behavior, well-captured, especially with the low light. It definitely adds to the intrigue of the subject(s)...

A cool shot there (as always...) And you used a 1Ds Mark II instead of 1D X why?
Thank you Ilya. I sometimes take out two cameras with two different lenses mounted on them in order to cover more FL "ground", should a need arise. My primary camera & lens at the time was probably 1DX + 400 f/2.8, and 1DsMkII + 50 f/1.0 was my second setup, so that lenses do not have to be swapped in the field. Then, while waiting for more morning light, I was shooting with a superfast prime pre-mounted on the old camera. Ideally, I should have a backup 1DX(II), but I can still make do without it.
