Just got back from Horsetail Falls and this is just a quick edit, but I could not wait to post this. C&C welcome, of course. This is with just some quick adjustments on Lightroom. What a day after several solid days of rain!

Fred, coming from you, that is a huge compliment! I had decided upon the lenses I wanted to use (two tripods, two bodies) and kinda wish I had used a wider lens than this one (180mm) but I am still very happy with how this and other shots turned out. As for your comments on the detail, the Leica R 180/2.8 is a wonderful lens. I am not 100% sure (and if you can tell me how to tell, I would be grateful!) but I may well have been using the SR app on this shot. I went back and forth between regular shots and SR app not knowing if it would work on this subject, but figured I could give it a try....

Thanks! There is a huge amount of water in the valley and many waterfalls springing up all over the place. Still, it was cold enough on the valley floor that I sat through 3 or 4 snow showers waiting for the firefall (and figuring it would likely not happen) so perhaps it is cold enough up top to decrease the amount of melt from the snow pack. It does not seem to take much water, but gusty wind helps generate more spray and it was not very windy.

Hey Stephen,

Very nice color on Horsetail Falls, but the 1 tree blocking most of the rock face of El Capitan really takes away from this for me. It's a visual distraction, a clean rock face would have really made this sweet.

I agree. More than just the firefall which is awesome, the "burning cloud" is simply amazing! Great capture!

Can't disagree. My wife was with me and though I scouted a cleaner view, it was a tougher hike so I stuck with the easier location. Life involves compromises. I am still happy with the pic though it probably could have been better. Will try again tonight and may go to a different spot but unlikely I will get light like this!

We met and chatted for a while last year, on your last evening I think, in the meadow above the picnic area.
I am going to the Valley tomorrow but the forecast is calling for some afternoon clouds. Will see...

Impressed you remembered! Yes, my wife had never seen Yosemite so I could not resist the return pilgrimage. After the light last night (and yesterday morning!), I am sure glad I came! It was also great to hear my wife's reactions when the firefall started. She was giddy with excitement. Really fun! How lucky that the very first time she saw Horsetail, it looked like that!

I like that you have the pine tree in the shot. IMO, the tree helps frame in the waterfall along with the large vertical rock outcropping on the right. Glad you were rewarded with such great light. Fantastic picture!
