Hey guys,
I've heard that some people like to use the clear image zoom feature on the sony a7rii to effectively double their focal length range. Do you guys use this feature often? What are some pros and cons?

I shoot RAW and crop/sharpen to taste. Why would I use this instead?

If you shoot jpg you can get an effective 3x teleconverter.

Fred used to sell a Photoshop plugin that did the same thing, and then some.

I wasn't aware you could use clear image zoom on the A7RII. I use it on the a6300 but the functionality doesn't work the same on the A7RII for me. Could you link to a tutorial specifically for the A7RII?

To be honest I haven't tried it myself yet heh. I just saw it on YouTube for the a6500 and wanted to see what people have experienced with it. Some say it's great, but I've heard raw files don't support this

Spoiler alert... it's called "interpolation" and it's been around since Photoshop was invented... and you can do it with any digital image.

Yeah unfortunately for me, I don't have time to bring every image into photoshop. It's really nice to be able to make those decisions in camera, so it's cool that a company has implemented it.

(Slightly) off topic - sounds like clear image zoom is only available on the a7rii when shooting jpeg, but what about regular digital zoom? With all the pixels available on that camera, I wouldn't mind throwing a few away in order to gain some compositional flexibility, and I would prefer basically cropping in camera as opposed to post... but if you can't shoot in raw it's a no go for me.

What really would be great is not messing with the raw file (you cant interpolate and have it still be RAW) but rather viewfinder simulation of various crops to aid composition. You could thenthen crop or crop and resize on import.

Yeah, a compositional aid like that would be great. I tend to go off what I see in the viewfinder and to have a somewhat difficult time visualizing a crop from a full frame.....

I use it sometimes in video when shooting 4k. Works great as a smooth zoom.

I don't have the A7Rii but I do use it with my A7s and did previously with my (sold) A7.
Being variable it is so much better and more useful than the old just use 2x or 4x zoom on many cameras.

I have it set to the down button (sometimes) with my A7s so I can use it on the fly.

It may well come in handy for video as you can use a fast prime as a 2x zoom (85 1.2 "zoom" for instance).

It is pretty well lossless though the more you zoom the worse it gets.

I wouldn't use the digital zoom setting (which is basically clearimage zoom to 2x and digital from 2x to 4x).

Another use for it is to avoid vignetting FF with APSC lenses if shooting Jpegs (sometimes you only need about 1.2x or 1.3x which has very little effect on image quality).

Not something I use a lot but I do find quite nice when I do.
