This Winter has been a chilly one here in the Pacific NW .. More freezing temps than many of the preceding years and SNOW... shhh.. We don't like using that 4 letter word here... Hopefully back on track now as things return to normal.
Amazingly through all this cold weather.. The birds flourish!

Fabulous set Terry....Vancouver Island must be this little island oasis that keeps it's residents year round that almost no other place so far north is capable of doing.....finding hummers in the snow is so out of the typical for those of us who only see them either in tropical places or during the warmer months of the year where we live.

Great shots Terry. #4 stands out to me as portraying the winter conditions around the hummer the best. Don't be too afraid of that 4 letter word, I'm just sending a bit of that stuff down there ahead of me so I don't get too home sick when I arrive

Well done, Terry. I especially like the comp of the Varied Thrush Thank you .. Those Varied Thrushes are shy birds for me but that day they were all over the yard and especially in my cherry tree.

Gorgeous work. Love seeing the hummers with the snow.
Birdie Birdied.. Thank You .. I thought shooting in the snow was novel .. But I hope it doesn't become a trend around here!!!

Eric Hi Eric .. indeed.. I recently started a flickr account and had a few folks wondering whee on the planet these were taken .. Snow here isn't common (fortunately) but it does occur and watching the hummingbird behavior during the cold is remarkable... They don't really seem to notice, but perhaps become even more aggressive in guarding their feeders...

Geoff Dang it Geoff.. Don't be bringing that while peril ( SN#W) with you when you land here to reside.. You wouldn't be a popular guy if associated with the cause of Vancouver Island cooling! Besides, I know a man of your "means" can fly off to find snow as needed!!! and Thanks for you're note ... Looking forward to meeting you this Summer.. Terry ...

Those are really nice...interesting how the Anna's are colonizing snow country in the last few years. They don't migrate and we have them in Central Oregon where the temp reguarly can fall to -20F.

marvellous images. surprised to see these "tropical" birds in the snow. One would they would migrate to the warmer place. Possible some one is feeding them?

Wonderful set! I'm pretty fed up with your four-letter word here in the NE U.S. but I must say I think it added value to your pictures! It's rare for me to see any HBs in snow and though I feel for the little buggers, it sure compliments their already-beautiful selves.

Thats absolutely incredible.. I had no idea they could withstand such cold.. On occasion here we may see -8C ( arounf 18F) -20F is near -30 C Thats wild... These little things are tougher than we think! Thanks for your note... Terry

But as far as I know, this species does not migrate... That said, they have been seen in Alaska and Saskatchewan .. so perhaps some do try to expand their ranges and either die in Winter or head back to warmer habitats??
