Anyone use the junior boom? Is it overkill for most situations? I've been looking at the junior or baby boom. I have a light duty boom now and feel a little uneasy with it fully extended. Thanks.

I have the Avenger D650 which is in the same class, meaning serious capacity and seriously heavy. I can fly 20 lbs at 7' but it requires 30 lbs of counterweight. The boom alone weighs 15 lbs, so the stand must be rated for 20+30+15 = 65 lbs. I recommend a steel roller (junior, of course). You can live with a baby boom for a 10-lb fixture, but the steel junior roller is still advisable.

I have a Matthews Junior Roller and a Baby Junior Roller. I'd definitely put it on the heavier stand. I plan on using it with a Profoto B1 monolight and probably a type of softbox or photek softlighter. There are times I just need to get the stand a little further out of the shot and my current boom dips a little with the weight on it when it's extended.

Same set up on various avenger rollers (the big ones rated to 90lbs or so). Almost impractical to raise and lock without it being on a crank/elevator stand. Have a d600 or the kupo equivalent which I use more often.

The built-in weight is nice on the Matthews junior boom but the thing does weigh around 41lbs. It looks like the Avenger D650 weighs 33lbs with an attachable counterweight.

I use Matthews Mini Boom, and even this thing is a beast. I have a Junior Roller to go with the Mini Boom, and it's a perfect combo.

I prefer Matthews generally, but the D650 is built solidly and the removable c/w makes transport easier. It is designed to take additional weights (Manfrotto branded). The fully-loaded rig is too heavy to lift (would need three hands), so I agree with @voidsherpa about a cranking stand as being the ultimate convenience. As it is, I load the D650 after setting the height.

Depends on what you use it for. I have one. Great in studio. I hardly use it on location as it's too heavy - my hope before buying it was that it'd be a nice midway point between C stand arm and a Superboom, and I wouldn't have to lug a complete C stand around. In reality putting it, a head and modifier and the counterweight on anything short of a C stand makes the whole thing feel perilous. Now I just go kit stand with standard C-stand arm and knuckle for location work.
