The mighty river - the Yarlung Tsangpo in Tibet and later on in India and Bangladesh becomes the Brahmaputra - is at 3550 metres at this point, the temple is 4800 metres, for a rise of 1250 metres. Around half the switchbacks are shown, and the ridge above is 5100 metres. Tibet was ruled from here in the 14th century. The monastery site is almost 900 years old.
