p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Voigtlander 12mm vs Laowa 12mm ?

Well I got it down to these 2 lenses, they both have there strength and weaknesses
Both great for architecture, landscape and even the Voigtlander 12mm is still capable of astro work in the right hands and on a equatorial driven mount the slow speed of the lens in more doable

The Sony mounted Laowa 12mm not in the hands of many yet might make the choice an issue

Feedback of your pick and why greatly appreciated

Is it? Not really in my book.
Even the 15mm 4.5 is way worse compared to an f/2.8 lens like the Laowa or the Samyang.

By the way, you used a photo of the 15mm 4.5 instead of the 12mm 5.6.

I have the Laowa but not the Voigtlander. To my knowledge, if you get the Nikon or Canon mount for Laowa, they are working on a tilt shift adapter for Sony so it also serves as a 17mm f4 tilt shift lens. Not sure if that matters to you.

Laowa also has a filter adapter available for 100mm square filters. I got the adapter for free because I ordered the lens the first day it became available. I'm not sure if you have requirement for filters.

I bought the CV12/5.6 because it is small, light and I don't care if it is slow for landscape.
Quality is good.

laowa 12/2.8 (for canon) + metabones adapter = 609g / 74.8 x 82.8 mm + adapter
cv12/5.6 (for sony FE) = 283g / 67.4 x 74.3 mm

I can underline that statement. The difference between two stops is like using a Canon 5D (Queen Mum) or an A7S for your Astrophotography.

If you only occasionally do astrophotography and always carry a tracker (Vixen Polarie or similar) with you, then f4.5 may be sufficient, but if you plan on using this lens primarily for astrophotography I'd definitely look to a lens that is f2.8 or faster.

If you use a tracker you need to shoot for the sky and then for "earth" and PPit. Doable but way more involved.

I had the CV10 and the Robinson 14/2.8 and sold them both for the Laowa 12/2.8. I figured the Laowa can do double duty whereas the Rokinon I only used for Astro. The distortion on the Rokinon was significant enough even if it can be fixed with a profile. The Laowa on the other hand is nearly distortion free so it is far more useful for my shooting and fast enough for Astro.

All the Rokinon's I've had bad luck with after being spoiled with Zeiss and Canon glass
Rokinon could never give me that look of the better glass not to mention was never that sharp.

So how's Loawa 12mm for you in the sharpness area and are you finding you have to stop down for any Coma issues at night?

The reason for being interest in the Voigtlander 12mm was I'll have it on a equatorial mount that's even better then a tracker type system with more precise axis, but may be more persuaded toward the Loawa speed anyway if it meets better sharpness, low coma and also looking at a used Canon 14mm 2.8

Thanks

My scope that will accommodate the camera piggy backed on the top .....

Have you seen the unboxing video of the e-mount version? I just did and lost all interest in this lens and probably any future Laowa lenses. I though these were being made specifically for the mirrorless cameras?

It looks absolutely ridiculous the size of this lens with the added extension tube to the back of it. The photo you show on your first post has nothing to do with the actual lens for E-mount.

Check for yourself here:

Well considering they were advertising it for Canon, Nikon and Sony there was no way it was ever going to be designed for mirrorless, they've always been very upfront about that. It's a fairly big lens on an A7 but not crazily and it balances reasonable well in the hand.

But weren't they designing these for mirrorless only?

Or at least some of them?

I was really interested in the 15/2 but if it is the same with the huge built in extension tube I have no longer any interest in it, no matter how good it might be.

Nope they've all been designed for DSLRs, you can either get them in the DSLR mount and use your own adapter or buy them with the built-in adapter/extension tube.

The 2/15 will be a mirrorless design without an extension tube.

I have the Cv12 now which I really like. Love to see a comparison between the two. I don't shoot Astro so not sure it's worth the switch

Experience any low light coma or daytime smearing of the image in the corners?
Thanks

For DSLR designed lenses like the Laowa should get a Nikon or Canon mount. It lets use use an adapter with a lens foot. Helps balance it out. It also gives you better resale value.

I am a big fan of Samyang lenses for Astro work. I use the 12/2.8 fisheye, 14/2.8 and 24/1.4 all in EOS mount. With a lens foot on the adapter they all balance much better than off the front of the camera.

No smearing but a slight decrease in resolution in the extreme corners. If you want perfect figure it at like a 13mm lens. It's actually quite a good lens. It's slow and a little tough to focus precisely but to be expected given the extreme DOF. Distortion is pretty low too. Like to find a profile for it but I love the size. I posted a couple night shots when I was in LA. They are really nice throughout the whole image. Sweet lens
